Thanks and goodbye

I'll be leaving the GSTwin community soon.  I haven't been very active on here for the last couple years, but I wanted to say thanks to the community before I take off.  I've learned quite a bit on here, and many times what I learned saved me a lot of time and/or money.

It's come to the point though where I've decided to sell my 1997 GS500E.  It's a tough decision for me, but I don't ride it much anymore, and the money could go towards other things.  I'll be offering it on the Buy/Sell/Trade board when it's ready to sell and the weather clears up a bit more (Northeast Ohio).  It's currently in the shop for a check-up and new choke cable.

So thanks to everyone who has contributed to this forum over the past few years.  I hope that if I should decide to purchase another bike in the future, that I may find a group as wonderful as this one.

If you don't mind my asking, about how many miles and years have you ridden?

I'm just curious about people who quit riding, their reasons for doing so, and if there's a pattern.

Guess this should be an Odds n Ends, since it was moved, although nothing was said.  Anyways...

About four years ago I bought the GS, first motorcycle.  I was 20 years old.  I wanted a Gixxer, boss talked me into starting out with something less insane.  I'm Glad he did.  It's been a great bike for starting out on.

I've had the bike for four years, and put on something like 5-6,000 miles.  As far as why I'm getting rid of the bike now, part of it is financial.  It cost me $40/month for insurance, plus annual registration.  Yea, it's not much, but I don't ride it hardly enough to justify the cost.  Why don't I ride it much?  Well that has a lot to do with my ex-fiance...

The first year I owned the motorcycle I rode ALOT.  My girlfriend moved away for college, about 70 miles away.  I rode down to see her nearly every week, and if the weather was clear I was on the GS.  Then while I was with her we would take it out riding, so the miles started adding up really quick.

The second year I owned the bike my girlfriend and I moved in together, and went out riding quite a bit, but not as much as the first year, since I no longer had to ride 140 miles round trip to see her.

The third year I owned the bike the lady and I got engaged, and I was saving for our wedding.  The bike needed tires & brakes, but I promised I wouldn't spend any money on it, so it sat.  Tip: Fix your bike, then get engaged! 

And the fourth year I owned the bike, my fiance left me (wasn't ready, needed to "discover herself", blah blah, etc.).  On the plus side, I could now afford to fix the bike.   Problem is, I didn't feel like riding.  I enjoyed riding the most when she was with me, I really don't care much for riding solo.  It bores me.  I like to have somebody with me to enjoy the ride.

So that's my story of why I'm quitting.  I've thought about keeping it for the few times I do ride, but I could use the money.  I'm sure I'll miss it from time to time, maybe someday I'll buy another bike.

makes sense to me... it's as if there was a psychological connection between gf/gs no? when you had the gs your love life was good, then your love life was messed up so the gs doesn't seem appealing. very interesting  (no charge on this consultation).


I've had mine for 9 months and i'm getting close to 6000 miles now

scott. sorry to hear things didnt work out. I remember your picture, of the two of you on your purple gs, right? Hope things work out for you in the new chapter of your life. maybe one day you'll decide the time is right to get back to motorcycling, maybe not. I know more than a few older riders that rode in their 20's, gave it up for almost that long, and got back on recently. I ride with a few of them. Good luck in your adventures.

Scott, congradulations and sorry to see you (or any rider) hang up your keys.  It's a tough decision but I understand it.  No need to disappear though -- if this is perhaps a couple of year delay in riding, you can keep up your interest up by reading what to and what not to do.
