ok... so I had a small oil leak under my kickstand.... I gathered that I needed to replace the clutch rod seal....

Some said it was horribly difficult... some said it was increadibly simple...

I was scared... difenetly didn't want to crack the case as some suggested

I removed the clutch cover and found that the perfectly good clutch seal had unseated its self...

I pushed it back in and seated it firmly.... took the bike on a few more rides.... no more leak!!!

$4.00 saved and trouble averted... I feel swelll

BTW... Removing the clutch rod seal is easy... If i get around to it I'll try to make a faq about it... I've seen several questions in regards to it

so, do you think this may be the culprit for a slight oil leak I have on that side..only leaks when the bike is running, kind of drips out the bottom onto the frame rail, and then down the kickstand when the bike is parked (no, it's not chain lube). Is this seal directly behind the clutch rod?
Thanks

Hi KYGS500 et al,
Actually, you should be replacing that seal anyway.
Seals and o-rings should be replaced whenever they're disturbed.
This will pop out again, and it may not be at a good time.
Do it right, spend the lousy $4, and be done with it.
I'd hate for you to lose oil that ends up on your rear tire and takes you down with it sometime soon.
You'll be safer in the long run if you replace the seal.
Best wishes,

ok, clymers refers to a oil seal retainer (immediately behind the drivesprocket) Is that what you are refering to when you say the clutch cover?
is that where this clutch rod seal is-behind that? i have a leak and I'm trying to troubleshoot. thanks!

I guess he was talking about the sprocket cover when he said "clutch cover".

I was astonished to hear that the clutch rod seal should pop out just like that, because if everything is right it should be secured behind a stamped sheet steel thingamajig (probably what clymer is referrin to as "oil seal retainer.)

scootr9718,

If its dripping down the kickstand side (the left hand side when on the bike) - is it coming from the alternator cover? I had a similar leak- only when running and a few minutes after turning it off. It turned out to be a ripped alternator cover gasket.

well, that's what I thought it was at first (alt cover) but I have already replaced that big ol gasket, so I've moved on to this possible oil seal thingy. As said, it looks like it's behind a big bolted on piece of metal...so I dunno? Where else could the leak be coming from?

It might not come out of the motor at all, but just be chain fling under the sprocket cover that "sweats" out oil.
