Well, tonight after work I was sorta just putting through the parking lot (like I normally do)...As I got onto the road to my house, I decided to see how much of the throttle I'm not using. Normally I only twist it maybe a half inch or so to take off and a little bit more for the acceleration.

The road I was on was void of cars and other hazards, so I got up to second gear, then twisted the grip nice and hard.

......I was quite surprised. The engine sounds sooooo throaty and powerful when it's opened up nice and wide; I was also going 60 before I even realized it.

Well, with my 4 seconds of fun over, I pulled into my driveway...quite happy  :thumb:

I'm sorry to hear that your drive home from work is so short.  I wish I worked farther away myself, but 15 minutes ain't bad.

You think THAT throaty growl is nice? Throw a lunchbox filter on there and change up the intake noises. It's AMAZING!!

I'm assuming that rejetting is required when putting in a lunchbox?

when you say "lunch box" do you mean the filters that bolt directly onto the carbs, or the filters that fit inside the air box?

Yup. I've got it alright now, but am going to dyno tune it to make sure. Running 20/62.5/135 atm, but my midrange is a bit soft, so I might go back down to stock mid-main. Not sure, will wait for dyno runs to confirm.

Lunchbox ones are ones that bolt directly to the carbs, removing the airbox. There are two different types that bolt on, one being the lunchbox and the other being the pods. Pod filters are individual filters for each carb, while the lunchbox is one big rectangle that bolts to both. It looks like an old lunchbox, rectangular and stuff.

Advantages/Disadvantages?

Advantages:

  • Different intake sounds make the bike sound AWESOME when you accelerate.
  • Accelerates harder, especially on the top end
  • MUCH easier to access the carbs. MUCH MUCH MUCH easier. i.e. carbs aren't a nightmare to work with now.
  • Looks cool.

Disadvantages:

  • Price. I think somewhere around $50 or $75? Not sure, as mine was a trade for the drop-in.
  • Requires a rejet.
  • Slight loss in the bottom end of your powerband. Won't pull as strong from idle, but if you rev it a bit you should be fine.

$32.50 *SHIPPED*.  I keep posting this link, it keeps being ignored. I've never seen the drop-in for nearly this cheap.

Alpha was referring to the lunchbox, not a drop-in filter

Holy crap! Awesome link! A lunchbox for dirt cheap! I always see the drop in for $50 something.

And yes, I'm running stock exhaust right now. I'm going to put on a Yosh can (off an FZ1) in a few months time, which will probably require me to rejet.

And one more disadvantage: Drop in gas mileage (sorta). I usually average around 50mpg or so, 55 if I do a little more highway cruising than usual. Now I get 56 highway (I tested with a tank of gas on the highway), and roughly 45 city. When I ring 'er out in the hills I get aroun 45 as well. That either means she stays as efficient, or I ring her out on the streets too. I dunno which.

I hear all this stuff about mid-mains. What are they? I only knew about the pilot and main jets  :dunno_white:

On the 2001+ carbs there is an added jet that is used to produce a better transition from the low speed jet to the main jet. This mid-main jet allows for better air/fuel ratios across the rev range due to the added adjustability and versatility of the third jet.

Hey Alpha,  will you send me a PM after you dyno ur bike, with your jet settings?  Im considering putting in a lunch box K&N and leaving the stock exaust on my '05.  I'd really like to know what worked for you, so i could start there when i go to rejet mine.

skoebl

Man, I can't get enough of that sound

I took a few extra trips around the block just so I could hear it again. :icon_mrgreen:
