I'd almost guarantee, ducking down (kiss the tank) below the fairings wind stream on a GS500F would see you achive a higher top speed than is achievable on a naked GS500.

3imo

The advantage would be nominal at best.
to know for sure you would need to use the same bike in like conditions.  and the same driver.
This could be argued to the ground and never figured.

seems that most GS500's have an average top speed between 100-115mph. faired or unfaired.

IMO the fairing is there for rider comfort, and looks.

THATGUY1025  has a faired bike. when we go on a run I'll race him and see.

I can tell you without a doubt that on the top end, my bike will go slightly faster when I'm tucked behind the quarter fairing.  If I'm tucked and I sit up, I can literally see the speedo drop slightly.  I'm 5'7" and 160, so I can get low.  Larger riders' results may vary.  :icon_confused:

edit: on windy days, the difference can be as much as 5mph for me.
Something is wrong with my twin...all of a sudden it's V shaped!  Wait, no, now it's a triple!  ...and I IZ NOT a postwhore!

3imo

I get the same reaction. I have to tuck to get over 105mph if anything just to avoid getting blown off the bike.

if I lift up at speed the needle drops.    I have no fairing though. I just put my chin on the tank and close my eyes. :o

how'd you do it?  what mods gain top speed?I have tried and tried, but cannot get 115mph indicated.
Do you have to redline 5th gear?  It seems like my 99' won't redline in 5th.  plus I start to run outta road.
so far I 'm just  8)  I wanna be more like  :o.  ya feel me?

oh!!  he's talkin bout this.

$10K  for 150mph?  I guess I am stuk at 115mph.

where do you race?  do you have pics of the bike?

I like getting information with all the facts...

so today I took my 2005 GS500F on a speed run.

4 attempts at a straight stretch of private road. I wanted to see the difference the gear selection and a reduction in wind resistance made.

1st attempt: 5th gear head down below fairing = 175km/h

2nd attempt: 5th gear head just up above fairing height = 172km/h

3rd attemp: 6th gear head just up above fairing height = 170km/h

4th attempt: 6th gear head down below fairing = 180km/h (111.85 mp/h)

*all speeds as indicated by the speedo.

When left in 5th the bike climbed to 170 the fastest but then struggled to achieve much more speed. It took along time to get to 175. The bike was reving to alittle past 10,500rpm.

When in 6th the bike got to 160 fairly swiftly, then slowly creeped its way up to 175, then even slower up to 180. It was still building speed ever so slowly when I ran out of road. This speed was achieved at around nearly 10,000 rpm.

Just having my helmet out from behind the fairings screens slipstream really affected the top speeds, especially when in 6th. The engine just couldn't overcome this extra drag.

Variable Factors.

Now I ensured my tires were at pressure (33 psi front, 36 psi rear) before attempting this and I had full kit of saftey gear on. I weighed in at 81kg with all the gear.

The bike is completely stock. Stock carbs, airfilter, exhaust, tyres, not even a fenderectomy.

The bike had 2600km/s on the odometer. I warmed the bike up with a 30 minute ride before the attempt.

The bikes fuel tank was just alittle over a 1/4 full. The bike's petcock was in the ON position.

The bike was running BP Ultimate 98 octane (RON) fuel.

The bike had Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 engine oil.

Air temp was 23 degrees celcius and there was no wind.

The bike was suprisingly stable at this speed.

Yesterday on a downhill on I85 i managed 124 indicated.

124mph   :o

A friend and I went for a short ride around Enterprie yesterday. I was on the GS o'course and he was on the KAWA Z1000.

HE sure got RREALLY small  RReally FAST.    the GS was strugglin just to catch up.   He topped 174mph on that thing.

Calll me a PUSS but I don't need to go that fast.  THe GS is OK by me.

well just once.  but I hadd all my gear on and I was prayin the entire time. :thumb:

Today I set a new record for my bike, 182 km/h indicated.

I was kissing the tank like no tomorrow to get her to creep past 180 (luckily my bike has a clear front shield).

I'm starting to think that in stock form it doesn't have much more in reserve than this. Maybe 185 - 190 tops if the road is long enough, I used a thinner weight oil (5w-30) and I shed some weight.  :icon_rolleyes:

allmtrslut

on the real i dont think the bike feels that stable at those speeds. I have taken her up that far and would rather be doing 150 on a sport bike just casue its gonna feel alot more stable. I dunno about you guys but my gs doing 120 felt like i was pushing the bike harder then i should have been. And try saving that stuff for the track, to many factors on the street going againts you.

roguegeek

- 110mph on the GS. Just doesn't seem stable enough to go any faster than that
- 145mph in my Z28.
- 165mph in a C6 Z06. :thumb:
- 100mph+ on various sport and exotic cars.

I was thinking about this old thread today while riding down US 319 to the beach.  Doing the math, with stock gearing, the max speed of the bike without over revving the engine is around 116 MPH in 5th gear and 130 in 6th gear.  This according to what my speedo indicated at 5500 RPM indicated on my tach with almost-new BT45s (stock tires).

I dunno, I got it up to 120 indicated on Ft. Tejon road today on my way home from the twisties.

one gust of wind and I got the shaZam! scared out of me, over corrected, got the wobbles, had to sit on the side of the road for a few minutes.

Hipocracy.... becoming more acceptable with the more power you think you have.

Longinus

I hit 184-185km/h today (indicated on speedo). 6th gear, elbows and knees tucked in tight with helmet resting on the tank while i peered through the windshield. I kept the throttled pinned as i sat up and within seconds i had washed off about 15-20km/h.
We have a lot of long, flat straights around here and on these roads with me as the rider it dosen't seem as though the bike (totally stock) has anything left. But it does try like a little trooper  :) .
