I had a earlier thread about this  (1st time I talked to dealership he hadn't a clue on the issuie) and this week the dealership said yes their is a update in these engines for cam floating, the service guy said he received a letter from the company explaining that these engine casts had cam tolerance issuies. But he said that the issuie is not a concern and to run the bike and bring it to him at 3000miles to do the cam work? Then I called Suzuki main office and they said they hadn't heard of this update and  don't relie on internet chats (i.e. GStwin). So back to square one, I'm going to call more dealerships and see if I can get this update in writing to cover my butt if the engine cam goes flat before 3000miles. So anyways not to happy with the situation right now and feel I should have got another brand- but damn it I love the ol' girl even if she does have a little tick!!!!

It's the old axial play issue. The GS has been plagued by this since inception. It's nothing to worry about. Worst thing that can happen is the occasional "clunk" from the head, but that does no harm.

It certainly will not "go flat" on you.

the dealer finished doing my update and i finally get the damn thing today... unless they ask for your vin and check on their computer if you need an update, there is no way they would know and they are lying to you.  My dealer, who I like and trust, had no idea about any update until they were prepping the bike and ran the vin.

This doesn't seem to be a new issue, and there are plenty of people who have not had a problem with it other then a slight noise during break-in... If the oppertunity is there, and its free, I guess it's worthwhile to take it.  But then I don't know if I want someone else wrenching one of my machines unless its absolutely nessecary.  The choice is yours, if you really want the hassle to find an honest dealer, go for it, but it doesn't sound like you'll have any problems if you just let it go.

my 2000 model has shims on each of the camshafts to prevent this issue.  According to a review I read they've been doing this since the early 90s.  Do the newer "f" models not have these shims?  If not, that's a pretty major oversight.  If the shims are there I don't think you have anything to worry about.

cheesy

some have shims and some don't.  iirc the shims are fairly thick... in other words... it's possible to have a lot of side to side play but not so much that you need shims.

it's not an 04-05 thing... all gs's could potentially have this issue.

It's an occasional "clunk" or "tock tock" from the cylinder head. And it's really nothing to worry about.
