Til the new bike arrives!!  I got the call from my dealership two days ago.  A brand new Triumph Daytona 675 in Scorched Yellow was there, unpacking had begun.  Everything is in place now, insurance, financing, just waiting for the bike to be ready tonight!  It will be my first time on a faired bike and a bit more power than I am used to.  The break-in period may be a good thing, it'll help me get used to what this bike is able to do.  I think I'm lucky in that Triumph has gotten so much press about the 675.  Accessories are appearing rapidly.  The only problem is competing with all the other new owners for parts  :)
I'm goingto be damn near useless at work today...  Too excited!  And today may be the 6th relatively dry day we have had in the past 46 in the Bay area.  I'm sick of riding in damn rain gear (yeah, I know, bitching about riding year round).
I will definitley post my opinions on the bike as I get to know it better over the next few weeks.  And, luckily, a good friend out here has informed me that it is acceptable for me to sleep in the garage tonight, without being sent their by my girlfriend  ;)
Here is a photo of me on a red 675.  I haven't seen the yellow in person yet, only on a speed triple, but it looked damn good....

I sat on the red one last night. I didn't want to get off - it was BEAUTIFUL and extremely tall! Holy cats! What a bike. I can't wait to get one...

Holy cow, I can't imagine.  That has been pretty much at the top of my bike list since it came out.

Congrats.  Please post some pictures tonight!  Have fun and I hate you.

ok can I jus say that I am extremely extremely jealous of all you guys getting 675's Talk about tall, I couldn't get a toe down, and with Triumph being emphatic about not lowering them, I'm going to have to wait for aftermarket stuff before I even entertain the idea of getting one. The 15mm it can drop in the front and the inch u can drop in the rear with machined dog bones just arent enough for me I don't think. And modding the subframe and exhaust just doesn't sound like fun. congrats on the new bike!

oh and AJ..get better now cause if im never going to be able to reach on one...ur getting one

I can sympathize on the height.  Purely on looks, I was looking into the new R6.  But the height was ridiculous on it (I'm only 5'7").  As I learned more about it, I found many more reasons I didn't want it.  The 675 is definitely on the tall side, the highest I would be comfortable with.  Ahh, I'll just have to work to keep the bike moving at all times.  Screw that stopping stuff!
The more I read about the 675, its gearing, general size, the more I fell in love with it.  When I sold my GS and paid off my car I was lucky enough to find a dealership that could arrange a yellow one for me in a timely fashion.

Ive had and ridden I4's and I have no desire to ever have one again, a few months ago I was looking into a cbrr but would also have to have that lowered. Out came the reviews on the 675 and i've always had a thing for triumph. So then I had to visit the dealer just to "look" I'm in the process of selling my car and it's gonna be hard to keep from getting one. They're nice and narrow though so that helps with the height part, the R6's feel portly..its like trying to ride a draft horse.

I was really hoping I would not like it. It's been at the top of my wish list since I first heard of them too - and it's not as agressively styled as I would have thought when I sat on it yesterday I was surprised my chest wasn't rubbing on the tank - lol..

I love the height though - I'm 5"10 and a bit so it's PERFECT for me! Sorry all you short guys - I am hopefully going to be picking one up in the second batch - around June

I was sort of surprised on the availability.  The first round only includes 2000 bikes to the US maximum.  I didn't decide I could buy one until February or early march.  I only had to wait a month.  Not too bad.  One thing that did help was color choice.  I love the yellow.  The graphite is the one in demand.  Not for me, but to each their own...

The yellow is definitely THE one to get. You'll have to give some feedback and pics tonight. Congrats and I hate you too.

I've seen the 06 gsxr 600 and have sat on one. I'm 5'8" and it was managable but the look (red and black) was drop dead gorgeous and eventually the headlight will grow on me. I've only seen the Daytona 675 in pictures. But I like the headlights, suttle fairing style (not as agressive as the 600) and the carbon fiber accents and trim.

What are your opinions on performance and reliabilty between the 2?

jbeaber

Once you see a Daytona live....  You will be done....  It is gorgeous.  One big difference may be the size.  The 675 is damn skinny.  It's hard to tell from the photo above, but when you sit on it you notice how small it is.  A lot of the magazine riders have stated that it feels as though it is a 250 cc bike.  The other difference, which is the major selling point for me, is the gearing.  The 675 has a lot more low end torque, good power kicking in at lower RPMs.  I do a lot of street riding and that was a big priority for me.  The in line 4's don't really hit their power band until high RPM and, again from what I have been told, are not all that happy at low RPM that you encounter in city driving.  The only other street bike I came across (new) that as like this is the Ducati Supersport 800 (cheaper than the Triumph).  It's limitation was suspension.  The Triumph has an adjustable front and rear, Duc only rear.
Another fun aspect is the novelty.  Gixxers are common, Triumphs are pretty uncommon and this bike stands out.  The new Gixxers look amazing.  I love how most of the bike companies have gone with the tail that looks like it shoots upwards.  Also, the rear view of the gixxer is damn cool.
Reliability...  Rumor mill is tht the Triumphs are pretty good in this regard.  Bike comes with a 2 year warranty as well.  My mechanic is British and knows Triumphs well.  He said that I should not be worried, it will treat me well.

I'd say the gap in performance and reliability is more subtle than it used to be.

I haven't seen the articles myself, but the 600 shootouts in the magazines eem to place the R6 and 675 in first and second.  Which one wins depends on the magazine...

The sex appeal of the 675 is undeniable! Nobody has one!!!

I asked my dealer why they weren't all sold out pre-release and most of them were, but there were the guys who didn't want to drop 9k on a bike sight unseen - the one that was just sold last (the red one I sat on) was sold without even being test ridden, the guy just sat on it for 10 seconds and then bought it. That's the way I was with my GS - I sat on it and I bought it - that's my silly method for "how I know" lol I've sat on a gazillion bikes, the 675 is just perfect, natural comfort.

That's what I've been reading too. I think the new R6 is overstyled to the point that it looks weird (especially the new fairings). Also why did they go and change the headlight styling? The old circular dual headlights on each side were beautiful and agressive.

I saw an older red R6 with a fenderectomy today and just coundn't keep from staring.

roguegeek

I haven't seen a single 600 shootout yet for the 2006 bikes. Can you direct me to one?

Yeah, but are there any links to the actual shootouts or scans of them yet?

You have to look through a bit, but there definitely are some.  I have read one article with full scans

The 600 shoot outs have been exactly the same for the last decade...

I like the 675 a lot! Very smokin' bikes.
