I bought a gs from fl.   it has 4300 miles.  it started right up after I cleaned out the carbs. idles great
but smokes bad. now this bike has been sitting for a long time.
then when the guy I bought it from tried to get it running it he flooded it then gas got in the oil.
when I got it the carbs were clogged.   It was sitting way before he got it.
here is what i'm hoping for.....
1) all the smoke is extra burn off from the gas that was in the motor.
2) I used wd-40 to help me clean out the carbs. still burning off.

oh also, somebody gutted the stock muffler. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.
any input will be great...

drain the oil, use fresh stuff with new filter, and use new gas as well, and let us know, let it run for about 5 minutes, if the smoke doesnt start to clear up, turn it off and check the oil

extra gas and carb cleaning fluid should burn off immediately.

How long does it smoke for?  Right when you start it up and then it goes away when you've got it warmed up?

Is it a sharp smelling smoke or a thick smelling smoke?  Is it blue or white?

These details can tell us more about where it's from.  I have a few ideas.

Yeah, need more info to make a slightly educated guess

I only ran it about 1 or 2 minutes. not long at all. I just kind of half ass put parts on to see if it worked
now I can put together correctly.
Not too sure on the smoke. but I'd say...... I'll have to start it again.
I know it wasn't DARK. I'd guess light blue

Yea, blue smoke means burning oil.  Did you do a compression check?  That might be your next step.  Definitely change the plugs if you haven't yet.  If the smoke doesn't clear up then you're probably looking at new piston rings or valve seals.

If it's white smoke don't sweat it.
White means it's just condensation.
If the bike was standing a long perios it will need a few minutes
to bun that off.
Don't start taking things apart just try riding it for a few miles and see what happens.

is it time to check the valves?

so if your carbs were plugged, it's possible the bike was running lean before.  Lean mixture can run your engine hotter than normal.  hotter than spec means excessive cylinder wear.  cylinder wear means they eventually go out of round and you get oil burning.  The first sign of this is you're gonna spit blue smoke for the first minute or so until the engine heats up and expands.  As the engine wears more and more the smoke will last longer and longer.

checking your cylinder compression with a compression tester will answer whether this is your problem or not.  It may not be worth buying your own if you're only going to do this once.  Check to see how much your local shop will do it for.  Check if local tool shops will rent them out.

Yea, Autozone / O'Reilly / Advance Auto will loan you a compression tester for free with a refundable deposit.

Assuming there was no rust/oxidation on the cylinder walls then I'd say you were fine with suggestions made.
