Hi everyone. I'm looking to replace the engine on my 97 500e with a 2005 500f engine. Does anyone know if it's a direct swap or is it just not doable. I know the 500f engines have oil coolers now as well, so I was also wondering how that would fit in a 500e frame. The 500f engine I'm looking at is here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4632927654&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Thanks!

The mounting bolts are the same as they are on the E (I'm almost positively certain, as my case guards were made for a non-F model), but you'll need to rig up something to hold the oil cooler in place.  Aside from that, you should be fine.

I love this part of the description: "nice torquey motor"

And how...

Man, I want some wine right now. Some pinot noir...yeah, that sounds nice

Why even keep the oil cooler? Its pretty much the same motor as the E... and without the F fairings there really is no need for the cooler.
New to motorcycles.... old fart with Turbo Hondas. :)

that motor will drop right in.  no worries.
what a sweet deal.  I hope you get it cheap.  If I'd a seen it before you posted it, I'd be bidding on it.
good find.  scrap the oil cooler if ya want, but I'd keep it, just for piece of mind.

Would this part fit on a 97?

I rather desperately need a good guage cluster and whatnot....but don't want to dish out the funds for it
2006 SV650 K6....Finally back up and running!!! Now let the mods flow!

not without modification.

it will fit but the 97' tach is not electric.

this mod will require you to cut into the tach and switch out the guts.

I did it.  and can walk you through it.  but the tach will not be as bright as stock because the guts don't match up right.

I think i posted pics of my conversion.........

You might be able to drive the electronic tach with the '97.  Try connecting the signal wire for the tach to the not-common terminal on one of the coils (white or black/yellow wire).  Idk if the ignition system is a CDI system, but if it is this approach may not be a good idea.  Does anyone know?

Another option that may work would be to build a VR conditioning circuit using something like a LM1815 and take the tach signal right off one of the ignition pickups

I think sometime this summer I'm going to take an oscilloscope to my GS and figure all this kinda stuff out for certain.

dgyver

Also, the electrics are different on the 04+ engines. They use a single pickup for the signal generator. You should be able to use your pre-04 setup though.
Common sense in not very common.

one thing though, if you get the 05' motor, you wouldn't need to convert, would you?
