The insurance companies in my province have now decided that the gs500 is a sport bike. They 'revised' their black list and it now includes 250 ninja's, sv650's and even some KTM models, as well as the GS as a super sport.
I found out about this yesterday and needles to say, was not happy about it. So I called another insurance company, (apparently the cheapest one in my city) and got a slightly lower price. They gave me a price of $2371 for my gs500. So I figured, well why don't I ask about a real super sport. So I threw out the first bike that came to my mind; a 1989 FZR600. They gave me a quote of $2390 a year! So for $19 more a year I could be riding a real super sport. (Just for comparison, the GS makes about 40hp and the 89 fzr600 makes about 95hp) so the question at hand is should I just suck it up and pay the super sport insurance for the GS? Or should I pick up an older sport bike and pay the insurance on that? The way I see it is if I'm paying super sport insurance I might as well be riding a super sport. I'd love to own an 80's GSXR750, or maybe just an older CBR600. I really love my GS, and have big plans for modding it, but what made the bike so sweet was the lower insurance rates. I'm really leaning towards the new bike deal, but I still really want to keep my GS. I'm so torn! Advice anyone?

You are getting RAPED with those estimates. Do you have a bad driving record? I've been looking at 600cc sport bikes to move up to and the estimate I got from AAA is $620/year for full coverage on either a 2006 GSX-R600 or CBR600RR. I pay $101 for liability only on the GS but could do full coverage on it for $400/year.

Seriously.. I'm looking at like $600 US a year on a GS, for full coverage. I'm 19 years old, male, single, clean record.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

I think getting raped on moto insurance is part of Canadian culture?  :cookoo:

Ok. A better question to ask yourself might be, "Am I ready to move to a super sport?" Do what makes you happy and is within your skill level, but I wouldn't suggest moving to a super sport before you're ready only because insurance costs approximately the same...

Switch to State Farm.  You'll need to insure something else with them before they'll insure your bike (in Canada), but it's worth it.  Even if it's a cheapo life insurance policy it's more than worth it.  For the record, my 2001 CBR was cheaper to insure with State Farm than my 2004 GS500F.  Are you with Rider's Plus?  As an aside, my wife pays about $300/year for her zzr250.

Of course, if you've got a crap load of tickets you're going to get nailed regardless who you go with.

To answer your original question, I'm with Pandy.  Don't upgrade to a supersport because the insurance is the same.  Upgrade because you want to and feel you're ready for it.

Well that was my original plan; I was going to ride the GS for maybe another 2 years. In that time I would continue customizing it with race parts. Then after those two years I would move up to a super sport and keep the already race ready GS for a track bike.
But the thing is, I don't know if I can do that right now. My insurance comes dew in September and if I'm going to buy a new bike then, I'm going to have to start holding onto my cash now. Then with the cash I will have saved, and selling the GS, I'll be able to afford the new bike and the insurance costs.
The other thing I could do is keep riding the GS for one more year, get it all race ready, and then move up to a super sport and keep the GS. So really I only end up paying super sport insurance for the GS for one year.

I just bought my GS and i'm considering selling it once the season is over. It is not within my budget anymore for an extra 1500+ for insurance. It is silly and as much as i like motorcycles, they're just toys in Ontario as our riding season is only 1/3 to 1/2 of the year.

Don't move to a super sport if you don't want or aren't ready just because of the insurance. Stick with the GS until you really want to move up, especially if you can't make it work right now. But just an fyi, those rates are insane! 24 yr old female, clean record, about $280 full coverage.

bro u are seriously getting raped i pay only 15 a month for liability

Yes, getting raped, I know. But there's not much I can do about that.
My dilemma is in getting a new bike or not. I know I can handle a 600SS (I've ridden some of my friend's bikes) but the main thing holding me to the GS is the amount of mods that I have planed for it and its unbelievable flickability. It's so damn nimble! Not to mention the stock hold of parts for it that I've got sitting in my basement. Then again I could just customize the sport bike if I got it...

I do do everything myself. Why do you think I have parts sitting in my basmet?; because I don't have the time or all the parts required to install the new parts.  but what does that have to do with this thred?

Budget, please listen. I wouldn't address the new bike just yet. In fact, that's way too much of a quote for a super sport bike also! What you need to focus on is finding how to get insurance costs down on the GS. It shouldn't be hard unless you have a real bad driving record. Do you?

Look, insurance for a bike gets REAL cheap once you put a car on the policy also. Get your car and bike on one policy and you'll have no problems. You shouldn't be paying more than $400-600 full coverage on a GS. If you are, something is definitely wrong.
