I got the Vance and Hines exhaust tuning kit from dennis Kirk. :thumb: Trying to bring back some mid-range to the old 500 but the instructions they sent with it are written poorly. Has anyone else seen this mod before?

Exhaust tuning kit? I've never heard such a thing, nor did any results turn up in a search. Looks like you're the first.

Check it out. The write up says "slip one into the Collector" doesn't seem that should be hard but it has 2 ends! Whic end am I slipping into?
The V&H instructions specify that the Fat end go towards the motor and slim end go toward the Outlet.
Do I take the "slip on" part off of my full system (with the 10 pop-rivets) and stick it there?
Or just take the endcap off with the 3 bolts and it goes in there?  :dunno_white:
Am i Missing soething?

Yeah, not an exhaust question so much as a BAD INSTRUCTIONS wtf question.

I'd call them up and ask them.

These just look like restrictions to me.  Yeah sure you'll gain some mid range, but you'll probably also lose out on the top end.  You may not really care about this if this is a street bike.  Are you jetted for your exhaust as it is right now?  This may require a rejet in the less fuel direction.  it's just a thought...

I think I'm Okay with the Ignition advancer and stage 3 kit, I just wanted some punch at highway speeds. The instructions are real lame-0. I'll post my results when I figure out which end to lick and which to stick...

Thanks for being willing to share whatever you learn with others!  :thumb:

You are running a full V&H system right?  If you are stock exhaust equipped yet, then this product won't do you any good.

If you can take off just the muffler, from what I read on that site, you'll just slap it in there and hope you aren't producing enough carbon to choke off the exhaust when it gets turned sideways.

Just kidding, in theory it should work, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is too big to fit in any of the GS500 exhausts available, since it specifies it fits all "4 into 1" exhausts, which would all have needs for larger tubing than what our puny little engine does.

They are just exhaust restrictors to be put in after the collection into one pipe. If you have a stock GS exhaust it is probably of no use. If you have an after market slip-on, perhaps...??

CLICK HERE for a discussion of such on another board with V-Twin engines.

I don't know how this would affect the GS as we have a connection tube between our two exhausts.. :dunno_white:...you would be increasing the back pressure in the exhaust pipe, ergo the differential between the internal pressure prior to the exhaust valve opening and the pipe system. There is an ideal relationship, therefore the three different size restrictors.

Fluid mechanics is a complicated thing. :icon_lol:

Asmodeus

Yeah. I understand fluid mechanics.
I have the full system from V&H, no crossover pipe.
From what I understand;
1. These restrictors are made for the 2-1 sytem (Supersport) from V&H
2. They go in behind the ENDCAP, not the same as pulling off the slip-on, but in the end.
3. The effect is minimal.
4. I won't get that pop-pop sound on decelleration...
