I don't know of any bluetooth setup that you can use without using the phone itself to dial.  Maybe some of the high-end plantronics ones, but I think you'd still have to look at the headset.

I don't think it's workable.

I was thinking more of the voice dial.  That was my other question actually.  I know that most of the headphones have button to accept calls or what not.  I'd need to find a way to move a button to outside the helmet if I needed to make calls.  Wouldn't auto-answer work to receive?

interesting.  I'll take a look.  thanks for the links

edit: hmm - J&M available next spring.  they do raise another good point though.  You will be able to use their system with GPS voice navigation.  that could be sweet

I've seen a person jamed one of those super thin cellphone... (something like the Motorola Razor or Samsung A900) into their full face helmet to answer a call at a stop light...

Auto answer?  I don't know of any such feature myself.  My BT headset has a button you push to accept the call.  There is no way to make a call with it alone.  Not even voice dial.  The button only works as connect/disconnect or answer call.

Auto-answer is a function on some phones.  After x rings, it automatically answers.  I would assume that would work with bluetooth as well but since I don't have it - don't know :)

If a phone has voice dial as well (like the Razr for example), can you use that with the BT?  Press the button to connect and then "dial dan"?

I'll have to try my dad's out this weekend.  May be a moot point.

And the J&M stuff is insane.  Apparently, it's possible to have your GPS/cell/MP3/XM/CB all work through your headphones.  or you can buy their handlebar speakers (i shaZam! you not) to pump out the tunes.  After looking over there stuff ... wow .. just buy a car.

Anyone notice how that first link goes to POS Electronics.  I don't like talking on the phone when i drive, i will do it but i don't like it so much.  After reading this thread again i agree with the majority here in that is just isn't that great of an idea.  I mean i ride and want to feel free, not worry about who the he!! is on the cell phone when i am riding.  Plus wind noise would probably make the conversation hard, wither you would be yelling in the mic or have a hard time hearing who was on the other end.

I agree - it's more of an exercise to see if it's possible - not something I'd be using all the time (if at all).  More the ability to be reached/reach someone in an emergency.

And the POS link - can't even buy anything there - it's odd.

Hmmm ok ... i was imagining something like the Acura setup where you press a button on the steering wheel, say "dial dan" and it starts dialing your cellphone in your pocket.

Egaeus

I'm sure It's possible, but definitely not with a lower-end headset.

i have a headset, not buetooth, and the lil cord hangin with the button to push to answer.  I use it, put it around my ear, put my helmet on, i just push a button and talk.  Most of the time me and my buddies who also have verizon do it when we are riding in 2's, b/c then we can talk without yelling over the motor and having everyone hear me saying, HEY, LOOK AT THE FAT GIRL NEXT TO ME IN THE TRUCK WITH THE WINDOW DOWN!, AINT SHE UGLY!!    hahahaha.... ive done something similar to that b4, i scooted away pretty quickly when i heard her yell,  WHAT???....  hah

but seriously, i dont feel any less safe whn i do it, i am just as much ficused on what going on around me.  whats really dunb is when people have MP3 players and they have both earbuds on.  b/c then its just harder to hear anything.  i use my PSP as an MP3 player and i only use one earbud.

i usually answer it and say "hey, im on my bike, hold on, then pull over and talk.

and i can hear the other person 99% of the time perfect, and they can hear me pefect, i use a full face, so that is the main reason why i can...

I've never been able to get my helmet on with earbuds haha - always seems really painful.  That's why I'm considering something that's in my helmet instead of my ear.

But that's something to consider.

Btw - thank's for all the constructive replies :)

the helmet keeps it in place, just have to find he smallest one possible really....

I got stuck in traffic on the interstate for like 2 hours once, and I was behind this guy on one of those tall dirtbike BMW's and he actually took his cell phone out of his pocket, opened the visor on his helmet, and stuck it inside like right in front of his face.  It was quite a site, but at least we were pretty much sitting still the entire time though.   I've been thinking about buying a larger memory card for my phone so I can put a bunch of mp3's on it and listen to it while riding  :dunno_white:

thats what i do when i have to call somebody but dont want to take the helmet off.
just jam it between the helmet and my cheek and put in on speaker.
never while moving though
