Post Oil Change Question....

okay... before everyone jumps my shaZam!... I already did a search, and didn't come up with anything.... so I"m asking, because I love you guys....  :thumb:


okay.  After my oil change, I started the bike, let it warm up, checked the level, everything was bueno.

Then, I left the bike in 1st after I shut it down, went and ate some dinner, then when I came back out to start it, as I started the bike, it lurched forward.... heavily.

So, I repeated the start several times, and everytime I start the engine now, it lurches forward.  I used Suzuki 10w-40

Stop trying to start it in 1st gear. That's all I could think of. If you don't have the brake in tight (and sometimes even if you do), it'll lurch when you start it in gear. Same shaZam! happen if you try to start in neutral?

well, no, no it doesn't.



however, it didn't do this previous to the oil change, and I was kinda wondering wtf happened.

I don't know. But if that's the only "problem" and the bike otherwise runs fine, I'd forget about it and start the bike in neutral. I've never (purposely) started the bike in gear. I don't see any reason to do so, so just start it in neutral and ride off!

well, I usually shut it off in first, so thats usually where I Leave it.

Right, as do I. But starting it is different. Anyone care to recite the starting procedure as per the MSF course?

hahaha. very funny tet-a-tet (sp?) you guys have going on here.

the bike probably lurches forward because the oil is thicker than before or there's more of it. Either way I bet it will go away in a few days/weeks and it isnt harming anything. There is a little drag on the clutch, even when not engaged but in gear because its sitting in the engine's oil.

Go to bed, nothing wrong with your bike. If you also have trouble getting into neutral then its probably overfilled a bit.

Damn.. Pablo beat me to it.. I was gonna school you n00bs!  :laugh: Yeah, it's just drag from the viscous oil. It's a good thing, means the oil's thick.

Well the point I was making is that if you follow FINE-C (Fuel, Ignition, Neutral, Emergency cut off switch, Choke / Clutch), the bike would be in neutral and this wouldn't matter. I was making a point about not starting the bike in gear. That could lead to dropping the bike, or worse (use your imagination).

Oh, and your oil's more viscous now. Did anyone mention that?  :oops:

Some people prefer to start the bike in 1st gear while holding the front brake in. That's what I do, maybe some people call that bad practice.  :nono: Well.  :flipoff:

I've started both my GS and my SVS in first gear once in a while, and even when I'm *sure* I have the clutch all the way in, it still jumps forward a bit. It scared the heebiejeebies out of me the first time it happened! Now I start in neutral always.

Some people also prefer to do meth, and I don't really care. Whatever makes you happy. But like with meth, hold on tight with your right hand and know that at any moment you could come down.  ;)

What about a clutch cable slack adjustment?

Has anyone mentioned warming up the bike? Even in warm socal mid-day weather my Lola needs a bit of a warm up before I hope on and ride. Yes, my GS is Lola (Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets). I only bring the warm-up thing into discussion because if you're starting in 1st, that'd mean you'd have to sit there for the minute or two that it warms up...PITA. I park in 1st so she can't roll, but always shift to neutral before startup, let her warm while i put on my gear, then ride off together.
