So I'm trying to get an 89 gs running after sitting for 3 years or so. It didn't have a key so I got one, I replaced the fuel, battery, oil and spark plugs. Today it cranked over and acted like it wanted to go. It gave me couple of throaty coughs...then it stopped. The starter clicked about 5 times when I pushed the start button, now it does nothing. I hooked it up to a car and still nothing. I noticed the battery (which I just bought) was low on acid so I took it to the shop and as he was carrying it to the back room, he dropped it on the floor and ruined it. Now I have to wait until tomorrow to see if that was my problem. But, assuming it isn't what else could be wrong? My guess is the solenoid. I'm hoping you guys have some other suggestions.
ps. If it is the solenoid, I should still be able to compression start it right?

On a different note. Is there anything else I should be worried about after trying to start a bike that hasn't been started in years? I know I need to redo the carbs, but I'm hoping to hold out on that (at least for a little while).

It's nice out and I want to get this show on the road. please help!!! One more thing, I'm new and love this place. Great community.

you totaly need to clean the carbs.. no matter what...Just rip em appart and use some Suzuki carb cleaner.. it will take no more than 1Hr to get them clean.  I would also clean out the tank.. even if you just dump some Kero in it and swish it arround.. Replacing the fuel lines would be a good idea as well.. None of the above would cost much but can save you a ton of time in trouble shooting....

It may also have a bit to do with electrical.. Be sure to check all the battery connections and the grounds.. You may also want to clean up any other main contacts in the electrical system

yeah... cleaning the carbs is a good idea... it'll cost you all of 10 bucks to replace the o-rings in the carbs as well.   Make sure to clean the bowls, jets, and anythign that has a hole... use this guide  http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/

I wouldn't go too nuts hooking up the bike to the car... you can burn stuff up... ie the cdi box, etc.

Check your main fuse... its located on the right side of the bike... follow the positive batery wire... its in what that is connected to (the starter relay  and motor)

good luck and welcome

also the starter solenoid. if you get clicks but not start try the solenoid. search for a short trick to test this with a screwdriver but be smart electricity hurts.

Thanks. I'll do some trouble shooting tomorrow, and looks like I'll be pulling the carbs.

Once you get the electrical system sorted out you'll want to do a compression check too.  Seized or worn rings and bent valves can ruin your day pretty quickly.
