Hi guys ...I am new here but hope to be a regular.  I just got an 04 GS 500F that has been sitting for a couple years.  It has less than 100 miles on it.  It starts right up.  My concern is should I do anything to it before I start riding it.  Thanks

Welcome! I have an 04 too - what color is yours? Mine sat for an entire year before I bought her in 05 and she had 6 miles on her clock. But 2 years is a little longer... The guys around here will know - I just post trash

Check tire pressures.

3imo

welcome.

if she starts and revs up and down without a hiccup. all you need to check is the standard stuff.

brakes <100mi check anyway for obvious damage.  remember going is option -  stopping is required.
tire tread/pressure and obvious damage (gouges ect...)

look for anything obvious then get her going.  Most mechanical problems will be felt while riding.

check for engine noises, bike stability and throttle response.

Ohyeah...make sure the handle bar is tightened down......I had an incident...once.....

Lube the chain.. check the chains slack and adjust if needed.. check/change oil.. check the tire pressure, make sure all your bulbs are working.. drain the gas if you feel its been too long.. or dump some octane boost in it and run it all out of there.. adjust mirors and hit the road  :thumb:

Lube the chain and cables, the first (600 mile) service is simply an oil change and tighten bolts, if its a runner then ride it, take it easy at first and make sure you check the tyres for cracking. In the handbook and service manual it says change the brake fluid every two years but if it was stored well it can probably wait a little longer. There was a recent post with a link to Kerry's "how to" on changing the brake fluid which is fairly simple once you have read it it but don't try it untill you know what you are doing.

Good luck with the bike and welcome.

Easy there. While yellow isn't my personal fave, there are some that would say that's the most bombest color.

Most bombest.
