in a few weeks its going to be 1 year since I purchased the 2005 GS500F  :o and I got this offer from the dealer to extend the warranty with a protection plan. Anyone has experience with this?

I spoke to the dealer and they said everything is covered, except me dumping the bike  :cookoo: so I was thinking about getting the 2-year protection plan for over $300 (they have 1 year to 4 years available).

I was thinking about spending a few hundred dollars upgrading my 3 years old computer, but it appears that now I have something more important to use the money for  :icon_confused:

I got the extended and when I finally got the paperwork, I found that it covered little that the dealer said.   And with my dealer they would probably bend me over when I tried to collect on something covered.  I cancelled it and got a refund.

If the dealer does not provide full coverage documentation up front (not the brochure, the actual full terms and conditions of the extended), they are probably scamming you the way they did me.

Have the dealer provide the full terms and conditions.  Read them and make up your own mind.  If you have been happy with your dealer, it may have more value.

Just a couple of thoughts on that.

First, here in UK the GS, like most other bikes are sold with a two-year warranty, Hondas normally have a two year AA membership & recovery as well whilst Suzuki offer the roadside assistance/recovery for one year only. I think that is fairly standard in Europe which indicates that they don't expect any problems.

When I bought the bike new in '03 and was waiting to collect it whilst the mechanic was finishing prepping it and the dealer was validating the insurance he was giving me the spiel and trying to sell me an extended warranty for the third year. Behind him, the mechanic mouthed "you won't need that" and he seems to have been right, the only problem I had was after about 15 months with corrosion in the fuse relay.

These things are simply insurance policys and obviously the insurer expects to make a profit so taken overall they cannot be a good deal, however there is the "peace of mind" thing and you have to decide for yourself. if you have gone for a year without problems you don't have a lemon but If you are concerned have a look around for roadside assistance policys, AA here, triple A for you, those sort of things but remember the GS is a fairly simple machine proven to be reliable.

Do you really ride a lot of miles per year?  Are there mileage limitations, or is it for x-years, regardless of miles?

I paid $1500 for an extra 50,000 mile warranty on my Nissan...and used exactly $0 for repairs.    I now just look at extended warranties as wasted money.

Put your $300 toward something else.   Or send it to me.

thank you all very much for your input on this. I think I will be skipping the plan then.

Let's see, in a few weeks I will have had the GS for 1 year, and so far I have exactly 6000 miles. It has never failed to start (only time was when I forgot to put gas on it), and I think I will use the money towards the next tune-up at a different shop (spak plugs, valves, etc).

For $300, you could get a wealth of mods... let's see...
$40 for a lunchbox air filter
$20 for jets
$160 for a pipe/flange/installation from a muffler shop
$25 for full LED guage lighting
$5 for new spark plugs (always good to have)
$50 for new oil, wax, wash soap, sponges, brushes, chain lube, and other maintenance goodies.

Or you could blow the whole $300 on a new wheel and super sticky rubber.

Most likely that extended warranty was NOT from Suzuki.

Suzuki has the SEP (I think that's it)
Suzuki Extended Protection.

I have it.
