Now that you've cleared up your chain problem, can I hijiack for a second? I have a noob question...

I keep hearing bikes around here, and on some I can really hear the chain moving. Not all bikes seem to have it, just some. Is a loud chain (or even an audible one) due to a lack of maintenence, or is it just normal for all bikes?

Most likely due to lack of proper maintenance.  A little noise is okay, but if you're really hearing it it's probably not okay.
