My Name Is Dave

I've got a little of this going on also. I don't have a clue how to prevent or treat it. I know Alpha mentioned that he waxes virtually every part of his bike, and rust protection is one of the reasons.

Yes, but there are places that can't be waxed and don't really have much paint on them anyways.  For me, it is the inside of the swingarm.  In some of the nooks and crannies where paint was not adequately applied, there is some small surface rust starting.

I haven't dealt with these spots yet, but my solution will be to use naval jelly or some other soft rust remover first.  This will get rid of most of the rust.  After wiping the spot clean with some type of paint thinner, I am going to apply a black satin finish enamel paint (industrial high strength paint!).

What specific places have you guys seen rust?

if you keep your bike super clean it will rust faster.

as a rust preventer I hit the trouble spots with wd40.  it collects dust and means I have to clean the bike once a week but I like a rust free look.

I removed my pegs and sanded down the rust areas and repainted.  I just spray a bit of wd40 on the trouble spots,  haven't seen new rust in about 6 mo since I started using wd40.

mine doesn't have a spec of rust...

but it's only a few months old

so wait, I keep my bike inside when I'm not riding it and avoid riding in the rain and dry it off when I do, does that mean I should still expect to see some rust?  I have rustaphobia  :o

rust will develop over time.

condensation for one, and humidity can cause it.  living near the ocean can rust metal even if you never take it out of your garage.

but in LX's case I doubt it will be a problem before you get rid o the bike ( :o)

I have found on my bike that I get rust wherever they weld anything, like the pegs and stuff, I usually take some candle wax and rub it around in there(clear perferbally) it seems to keep the moisture away from the paint, but if you guys know of some better things do tell

didn't mean it like that, but ok  8)

I meant over the life of the bike, being kept indoors and not ridden in the rain.

I ride my bike everyday(until she died) rain or shine.  I like the adventure of riding in the rain.  especially hard southern storms.  I won't go out in them cause the danger, but I have fun when I'm caught in them.

I see it as practice.  i like long trips and like to know I can trustmyself in any condition.

I don't have any major rust spots, but minor surface rust.  I guarantee you do too LimaXray.  Mine came from the dealer with mild surface rust.  Granted...I had to remove the rear wheel to see mine, and even then it was hard to see.  If you have rus-o-phobia, I suggest searching for areas that have mild surface rust and fixing them now.  Once it is scaling off and chipping paint, you've lost the battle.

WD-40 would work if you parked the bike outside, but you'll never be able to get the "nooks and crannies" clean after you've been doing it a while.  That stuff will run into every crack and start collecting dirt.  I like my bike looking showroom condish, so I'm all about the cleanliness!
