tank question.....

i went to put gas in my gs today and noticed some kind of yellowish plasticy rubbery material hanging down into the tank, partly still attached to the ring at the top of the tank. my guess is its some kinda spray lining the previous owner did? i noticed the "tank" side of the material was COVERED in rust, so that means thats not good for whats in my tank and would more than ikely explain why the bike is running like crap    my question is what do I do about it? is there any way to completely solve this problem or should i start looking for another tank?

Hi there,
It sounds like someone previously "kreemed" your tank with a fuel tank sealant called Kreem.

Either way, it's a plastic-like liner that coats the inside of the tank to cover rust.
It is supposed to be used after the inner surface of the tank is properly prepared with cleaners and other substances that "etch" the surface so it bonds properly.
It sounds like the  bonding didn't work well in your case.
Check with the makers of these products on how to redo the process.
I'd say you can clean it out and start fresh, but ask them how to remove the stuff.
You don't want it continuing to break up and lodging itself into carb jets etc.
