Is it legal to convert to HID?

I hear that it isn't so with cars that don't have auto leveling mechanism.
Would it be legal to install HID conversion kit on GS? Any issues with the fact that it would  loose hi/lo beam ability?

as long at it doesn't blind any one, but i was under the impression that if you convert you no longer have high beams

They make a high/low kit. The biggest problem with installing hid in a halogen housing  is that there is no "cutoff" for the light pattern. Light would be everywhere it doesn't need to be including the eyes of oncoming traffic.

I installed a HID kit which has both high beam and low beam on my 2004 GS500F

There is no glare and it is amazingly bright.

Aimed properly no one will flash you and the cops will leave you alone.

I'm not sure how it would work on the 500e because of the round light.

It's like having a miniature sun in your bike!

Would this kit fit a 2000 500e?

I can never use high beams around here anyway, so low beam only is fine. The freeway is hard to see at night, sometimes, so this sure would be handy. Cops don't seem to give to much trouble to bikers out here (uless they're going like 100+) so I wouldn't worry about a headlight upgrade.

Its only low beam. Depending on were you stay, you may not pass inspection the next time around

Well, I can't even use high beams around here, and as far as I know, bikes have it a lot easier through inspections. I'd still like to upgrade the lights, but I don't know if it'll fit.

Your lights are part of the safety inspection.  O0

To be technical...

Any modifications to your lighting system (including HID conversion) is illegal.  I've checked.  I'm kinda the lighting law expert.  Fortunately, most cops don't really care, unless it's REALLY out there (such as blue & red lights, I know).

I installed some non-DOT flush mount signals in the front and also a BRIGHT YELLOW bulb, and my bike passes inspection...  I was kinda surprised about the headlight bulb being a bright yellow, but I guess whatever makes me more visible to other drivers. :dunno_white:

Spot on, no exceptions.

Non-oem HID conversions were specifically banned by the department of transportation because of stupid people.  You can thank the thousands of morons who thought installing them in unfit housings (including the twits who thought to use composite reflector housings) was ok.  HID lighting needs to have a propper projector housing to operate safely and effectively and there are very few aftermarket or OEM projector housings that are adequate for the job.
