Really High Idle

I'm a noob still trying to figure out my bike. When I got it a few weeks ago it wasn't idleing, it would usually just die. I cranked the idle up a bit and it worked fine when i was just practicing in the driveway and in a parking lot. Now that I'm getting it onto the road and getting on it a bit more, the dumb thing will idle over 3000 and today it was even idleing at like 6000. Should I just crank the idle back down again, and deal with it until the bike gets reallly warmed up? Any advice would be great.

Yes, try just turning the idle down. You should set the idle when the bike is warm.

3000 RPM is pretty high for a high idle, but 6000?  :o

? Is the choke lever pushed all the way forward?

? Is the choke mechanism at the carburetor end of the cable retracting completely when you
do push the lever all the way forward?

? How low can you get the idle to go when the bike is warm, using only the idle adjust knob?  (If the minimum is 3000 RPM, your throttle cable may be too tight.)[/list]

It's also possible that your bike is simply running too lean.  But do these fairly easy checks first, and then we can dive into that possibility.

Alright, I pulled the idle down again. She's idleing at 1200 when i fire it up. I really don't touch the choke. I just turn it on and she stays on while i put my gear on, and by then it's ready to roll. I think the choke lever is jacked up anyway cause it doesn't make too much of a dif when I do choke it. When it gets really hot it will idle up to like 2500 max, which is alot better than that 6000 stuff. I actually don't mind a bit higher idle cause it makes it less likely for me to kill it, which i'm still doing every now and then. Only been riding a few weeks, and I love this bike.  :)

Also, this thing was sitting for like 7 months when I got it. I've yet to take it apart so I could find rust and a bunch of gum which could be causing all of this.

I had the same exact problem when I first got mine.

Basically warm her up, adjust to between 1200 - 1400, She'll do just fine.

That still sounds a little on the high side, it's your gas, burn it if you want or perhaps another anti-clockwise tweak on the idle screw.

I think it would be worth following the choke cable and establish if anything is actually happening at the engine end of it.

I've run a couple tanks through. But I've never drained it out, that will prolly come after this tank is used up. Its been running a mixture of Shell V-power and Amoco Ultimate, whichever station i'm closest too. I also ran a can of sea foam through it  :thumb: and that really perked it up so i'm thinking there must have been some crap in the engine.

Since it was sitting for 7months it might be worth doing a few little maintenance jobs. Get yourself a manual if you don't have one. Check the oil, perhaps do an oil and filter change if the bike has done a fair few miles without it, check and lube the chain. Also you might want to clean the carbs - any fuel thats been sitting in there for 7months probably gummed everything up. Only little jobs and fairly simple if your adequate at maintenance on bikes and have a manual. Plus there's always the gs experts for help :)

It sounds like maybe you choke is stuck open. Have a look at were the chock cable attatches to the carbs and check if anything is moving as someone else suggested.

I just checked the choke cable and everything is good with that. I had to take apart the handlebar cause mine was warped so i put a new one on so I had to check it by default. I really need to clean the carbs i think. I've been looking at that guide in here to do it and I think i'm gonna give it a shot. I'm still waiting on a owners manual. Taking Suzuki a heck of a long time to send it to me. I'll take some pictures of the mess when I take it apart. Thanks for the help again.

If you change the oil filter be exteeeeemly careful when putting the cover back on, the little stud thingys are very easy to bust, lots of threads about this, also care needed with rubber O ring. No great skill required just a little care and a light touch.
