tire question

So im going about 50 mph down the highway and all the sudden the rear tire starts to jump up and down, it was coming off the ground about an inch.I slowly pull over and check the rear tire and sticking out the center of the tire is a big bolt.Im going to the local shop in the morning to have replaced,i have bt45 front and rear.If they dont have this tire is it ok to replace with another brand? the size is 140/70/17

First I'd figure out WTF.

Was the road rough?

Is your tire out of balance?

Is there anything obviously wrong with your rear suspension?

Stuff like this doesn't "just happen" there's always a reason. If your tire is within wear limits something weird happened.

My anwser: (assuming everything else is in good shape, including the tire)

One (or more) of the little weight jobbies that balance your wheel decided to part ways with your bike.

As for the inch off the ground, it may have seemed that way, but I'm fairly certain it was less. Trust me though, I would have freaked out/pooped myself as much as you probably did.

Check the suspension, tire wear and tire balance before you go throwing money at it.

As for the tire type, it's best to have the same type of tire front and rear, but you can get away with it. DO NOT do this unless you ride like a little old lady.

My 2 cents, sure someone else will have something different to say. (and or flame me) But that's what I would do.

Ok i may have read your post wrong Circles.


BUT THERE WAS A BIG BOLT IN THE TIRE LOL 

and sticking out the center of the tire is a big bolt

If you have a stock front tire it's a bias belted one. You probably shouldn't get a radial on the rear, then.

If they dont have a bt45 in stock then ill get whatever they have in stock.At the end of summer ill order 2 new tires front and rear and keep the odd ball tire in the garage in case this happens again

Ok.. do a search for "radial and bias" with author set to GSJack.. you'll find all the info you ever wanted on tire brands and mixing/matching tires.

When I see nails screws bolts etc in tyres it always makes me wonder how the FU** they got in there. The last puncture I had  was caused by a 4" woodscrew, it had entered the tyre to halfway along its length then bent at 90deg, I knew instantly something had happened cos the wheel started to shake immediately. I looked at it and thought I couldnt hammer/bang/screw or otherwise force something into the tyre like that if I tried for a week and as screws are case hardened they should snap in half way before they bend to 90deg. The AA man who came out and fixed the tyre for me said "its Voodoo" and you shouldnt ask too many questions my friend.
