Trouble starting engine

Right - it allows venting while preventing anything from being sucked back into the motor.

Finally got it running!

I pulled the whole top end off, to ensure that the ring gaps were within spec- which they were.  I also lapped the valves (all four needed it). 

Here's the kicker.  I'm 100% sure I put it all back together the same way I took the carbs apart.  We're looking at the bowls, and realize that they were originally switched (drain screws were on the insides of the twin carb setup). 

After switching them, putting it all back together (one valve cover screw is now stripped...), charging the battery- it goes!

Its the first time riding the 500, I was actually suprised how well it performs.  Wheelies and stoppies too!
