Don't try this at home, kids. Bicycle chains have only a press fit of the rod, while the Motorcycle chain has a (if somewhat rudimentary) rivet head. You need a proper riveting tool to close the final link. Just pressing the rod in will not work, at least not reliably.

So I get how the types of chain connectors work, but what about the o ring/ non o ring chains? Which works better?

If you think you don't need a helmet, you probably don't

From a D.I.D CHAIN SPECIFICATIONS table in the 2003 Dennis Kirk catalog:

Size & TypeSealing RingMax. Engine SizeWear Life Index*Tensile Strength (lbs)Notes
    520S StandardNone250cc1007,200Economical standard street chain
    520NZ heavy-dutyNone250cc4108,220Heavy-duty type
520V Vector Supreme SealedO-ring400cc2,3506,830High-performance street chain
520VM premium sealed / goldX-ring750cc3,4508,120Maximum-performance street chain with gold side plates
    520ZVM superbike seriesX-ring750cc3,4008,525Strength and durability on today's high-performance superbikes
    * Wear Life Index should be used as a comparison for probable wear life, under identical circumstances.  Think of it as a percent, with standard chains being 100.[/list]

You need to take some of this with a grain of salt.  The D.I.D. 520V chain was OEM equipment on earlier models of the GS500E (I wonder what comes on them now?) so the Max. Engine Size of 400cc is somewhat suspect.

"Standard " chain must be pretty minimal if the lowest-cost O-ring chain will last 23 times as long.  But even D.I.D.'s "Heavy-Duty" chain will supposedly last only 1/8 as long as their X-ring chain. :dunno_white:

It's possible to get longish life out of a "No-ring" chain, but I understand that it requires constant vigilance and care.

    Does that help?
