What do you usually put on this guy when replacing it if anything? eg you rub oil on the oil cover o-ring to help seal it up.

I personally did not put anything on the o-ring when I swapped gas tanks on my wife's 91 GS500.  If you have a new o-ring I doubt it will leak.  The only thing I could think of is *perhaps* a small, very thinly applied film of RVT sealant.  I have Hondabond at my shop here, which IMO is the best gasket sealant and I didn't even bother putting any on the o-ring, and it has yet to leak.

you don't need to use anything.  It will seat fine and the gas would take the oil off as soon as it got to it.  Just make sure that you don't pinch it reinstalling it or you'll smell gas.

A little oil or grease can help with installation (avoiding pinching it, as it slides easier into the groove, keeping it in place in the case of grease.) But you don't need anything.
