these stupid things come up real quick on the service schedule when you're riding the bike a lot.

Indeed. I put about 500 miles a week on my bike, so I'd have been doing a valve job on my bike at least every 2 months... tooooo much for me, but then I'm a wrench wimp....

if its done right, it just need to be checked.

In 36,000 miles I think I have only needed to swap shims about 3 times.  That reminds me -  it's almost time to check 'em again....
