anybody got a sound clip of vid where I can here valves that need adjusting   I am getting a slight ticking noise at around 4500 rpms- 5500 rpms then it drops out and I get it again around 8000-9500rpms then it goes away again.  This is in every gear but it sound more like its coming from the instrument panel but I am not real sure its hard to tell while your riding down the road.   Thanks   and how bad is it to ride if they need adjusting I am about 250 miles from home and heading to suches Ga to ride tomorrow  will it hurt to ride the bike for the weekend and do a valve job when I get back home.     I am not expereincing any power loss or anything like that just an annoying ticking sound.   Thanks

Is the ticking noise happening going uphill, and accelerating?  If so, it's okay, you just need to be in a lower gear; the engine is working too hard.  It will most likely be okay.  Valve adjustments should be done every 4000 miles (8,000 miles, 12,000 miles, 16,000 miles, etc.).

he noise is there when just holding those rpms not just acceleration.   I am at 12000 miles on my 2004  and no valve adjustment    maybe I should check that when I get back home just to be sure.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools....

Thanks to advances in automation, Nike shoes will be made by robots. Unfortunately, the robots will be made by children in Malaysia.

I would take less time to do a damn valve check than it took to post this ... sheesh ...

Srinath,

I know I am reviving an old thread but...
Was it the valve clearance that was making the noise? I have the same thing and it is killing me!
It's only between 4500 and 5500 rpms.
It doesn't start making the noise until I ride the bike for about 3 mins or so (so until the bike is pretty warm?).
Any thoughts/ideas would help!
I have 6K miles on the bike and the 4K mile service was done at the dealership (so I ASSUME they checked the clearance!@)

yes. even if "nothing" is wrong, it's still best to do routine maintenance. i sure hope there's been oil changes and fresh gas at least.

If this freshershest-thread-ever gets spoiled by petty fighting, I'm gonna be so mad.

Mine is only at 4500-5500 rpms. And my valves should be fine.

yyup i do all routine maintenance CEPT for valve clearance and carb cleaning , evrything is good , so its okay to ride like this even though no valve check?  :dunno_black: :dunno_black:

I have an 08 and the tip of my windshield just above the headlight has a little play and it buzzes against the headlight at about 5k.  I stuffed a few layers of electric tape in the space and it stopped the buzzing for a while so I knew that was where it came from.  I don't know if this is a common problem or not but mine has done it since I can remember (since adjusting headlight?).  Mostly only noticed it with no helmet on which doesn't happen much
