I searched through the forums but I am not sure I have found the answer I am looking for .
Basically here is the situation it is a 91 gs500e with 9500 miles on it.. I am not sure if the previous owner checked the valve clearance but it seems he kept up on all the maintenance
I did not notice the tapping when I checked out the bike before I bought it.
It starts up AFTER the engine warms up. It is a steady ticking noise that changes with the engine rpm's I am going to do the screwdriver trick tomorrow to try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from but I think it is louder  on the left hand side if I where sitting on the bike

Should I be worrying about this ? the bike runs great and has plenty of power.

Thanks Matt

do a compression test
if one is lower than the other   (>15%)
then do a valve adjustment

and redo the comp test to see if that fixed the spread in comp between the cylinders

after you prove a problem is NOT the first few easily diagnosed problems...easier to diagnose
