Is there an indicator that we should look/listen for to determine if the valves needs checking?

The odometer clicking over to either 600 miles or a multiple of 4000 miles.

For example: 4000, 8000, 12000, 16000, 20000, 24000, 28000, 32000, 36000, 40000, 44000, 48000, 52000, etc...

If you hear a tickatickatickaticka coming from under the valve cover, then you should check them.

Tell you what, double your oil changes, so that you're changing your oil every 2000 miles, and check your valve clearances every, say...8000 miles.
