I checked mine against a radar gun.

Indicated 65.
Actual 64.

Sweet.

I want to pull redline in top with the stock gearing. That would be Hawt.

I don't feel safe on my GS over 80mph.  I dont think the suspension or chassis is set up for that kind of riding.  The bike feels like it's "floating".  My buddy took me for a ride on his CBR, we were going about 155mph and all the cars on the highway seemed like they were parked when he was weaving throught them.  The bike felt very solid even at that speed....although that was the LAST time I ever rode with him:-))

Asking about mods to make your bike look different is one thing.   Doing 102 on a public road is not smart.  One mistake at that speed and you could end up in a bodybag.
All it takes is one mistake at *any speed* and you can end up in a bodybag.   Hell... you don't even have to make the mistake mistake yourself.   There was a rider (owner of a local bike shop) here in Atlanta that died last week when his buddy's wheel clipped his front, breaking it... the bike hit a guardrail and he was thrown down a hill into oncoming traffic.

I didnt' check where the original poster was from, but going 100mph in a of itself isn't all much more dangerous than 80mph on an empty highway if you're geared up.
The average speed in the fast lane (where I do most of my riding) on GA-400 is ~85mph.... and i'm never the fastest vehichle on the roads.

Having said that... I don't condone going 100+mph.  Esp not on a GS-500 which is barely track-worthy with its skinny tires and crappy stock suspension, and ONE-DISC-FRONT-BRAKE (by far the GS's biggest flaw)

Another advantage of a nekkid bike is they promote safer speeds.  Any faster than about 80 is just obnoxious.

100?  80?  LOL.  when i was taking the MSF course, i thought i was flying at 15 MPH in second gear.  highway speeds should be interesting to say the least.

and this is coming from someone who is used to driving "hurriedly" on 4 wheels.

3imo

I have a three speed GS.

I stay in   :o for the most part.   :icon_twisted: gear is for safe stretches with little or no traffic.

My advise to the Noob: stay away from any speeds that scare you, and always stay below your skill level.

You get used to the highway shockingly quickly, though.

i'm not gonna rush into it!

I'm exactly the same as baco.  Usually go 85-90 in the car, sometimes get over 100.. feels like nothing to me now.

The bike?  Got it up to 30 in the parking lot.  Scared the hell outta me.

Your speedometer is more probably close to 10% error. That would be in the upper region. At slower speeds like at 60 or so (or lower), it'd be closer to true reading. This is true with almost ALL motorcycles and ALL cars and RV's and such, that is unless you own something super high dollar or have a premium calibrated speedometer. And I've not read of nor heard of any of these members owning such a machine. Your GS500 should certainly go well over a radar gun clocked
100 MPH. There are some on here that talk apples and oranges when they should be talking apples vs. apples. Same holds true for horsepower. Make sure the guy/girl tells you where it is getting measured. GS500 engine makes about 51-52 ponies. At the rear wheel after subtracting the losses, you get ~ 40. Brochures and some people don't talk RWHP. FYI

Mine will pull up to 105 (ind) in 6th with a 15T front sprocket...  Any more than that and I have to rev it WAY THE HELL up in 5th, then pop into 6th for the last little bit...  And that's just for another 10 MPH (ind)...  With my shins on the passenger pegs and laying on the tank...

Not really worth the extra 10...

And yes... I'm a squid...  I've run the baby G up to 100 (ind) on the Mercer exit of Northbound I-5 at 10:00pm...   :nono:  Not smart. :nono:  Very stupid. :icon_confused:

Old Mr. Wilson

If you can't get somewhere goin' 100 mph, you should 'a  left yesterday!!!

If you "hit" something goin' 100........ now we are talkin' a whole different world.........

I've seen 120 on mine but Online I've read that at 60mph you are actualy going 57.5mph.  That is like 4.166% error!! So, 120 = about 115mph.  I guess some bikes might have a smaller or bigger gap!! I did read this from like one of the big magazines I just don't remember which one...

red_phil

From what I have heard the speedo error increases with speed.

One UK rider compared his speedo with a GPS speedo and a cycle computer.

At 50 MPH indicated he was doing 49 - 50 MPH about 2% error.
At 80 MPH indicated he was doing 74 - 77MPH about 5 % error.
At 100MPH indicated he was doing 90 - 93 MPH about 9% error.
At an indicated 112MPH he was doing 100MPH about 11% error.

I guess there is variation from bike to bike and even from run to run, but I suspect the general trend
of error increasing with speed holds true for all out bikes.

 at people getting bent out of shape about topping out a GS500.  Post on the Gixxer or Kawi forum and it usually takes at least 140mph to get the squid-callers to come out.
