Anyone tried these for rear turn signals?

        I found something that i have not seen tried before.  Was kind of wondering if the the gs gurus thought that it would work.  Lockhardt Phillips makes a set of lights called "bike night lights" that bolt to the back of your license plate.  The look like they would be good to get rid of the huge stock signals.  http://www.jpcycles.com/productgroup.aspx?GID=1FDFCA58-3255-4040-85E6-3AF7BC820C96  My bike is a 2006 gs500f with a fenderectomy and reflecterectomy.  Now I need to get rid of the turnsignals.  Any advice for the front would help too.  Thanks!

Uh...you can always spend about....30 minutes of your time and shorten the stock ones.    O0

I could shorten the stock ones and look like everyone else.  I thought these might look a little different and a lot less noticeable.  I was just wondering if anyone had seen or used them before.

Well...you want to be noticable when making a turn. Its all in what you want. I am nowhere near a safety nazi, but I'm sure Alpha will chime in with his input   O0

Those look pretty sweet, I think that I may have to order up a set. You could even use those on the front. I think with most led blinkers, you need to use a resistor otherwise they will blink faster than normal. Some have the resistor built in, but you may have to use something like this

or just a $0.05 resistor from radio shack. I also saw these and was thinking about sticking them on my front fairing and on the sides of my tail light

Ill never understand why people worry about LEDs blinking to fast. Isnt that another reason for cagers to notice you?  :icon_rolleyes:

Yup, here it comes  :laugh: :laugh: And for the record, I'm not THAT big of a safety nazi, I'm just opinionated.

Turn signals are just that. Signals. You want the people in cages who don't notice you already to have a little extra lighting to see you with. You want them to SEE you signaling so that they don't plow into you.

OEM turn signals are regulated just like almost everything else on a road vehicle. They have to be a certain brightness and visible in both day and nighttime conditions. Aftermarket signals aren't subject to these regulations and therefore can be any size, shape, brightness, or build quality they want.

LEDs are fantastically bright at nighttime, but in daytime they are extremely difficult to see. My father has some of the brightest LED turn signals on the market (I forget the brand name, but they are fairly high quality) and he has them mounted almost directly to his license plate. Even though I know they are there, they are difficult to see in the day time both because of their placement (near the license plate tucked in close) and because LEDs are hard to see in day time. I have to actively look to see if he is making a turn in the day time, which most cagers won't do. At night they can sometimes be hard to see if the brake light is on because it is as, if not more, brighter than the turn signals, thus washing them out sorta.

If you want them, then go for it, but that's some stuff to think about.

Also, stock turn signals space out your bike. They define the extremes and note where the edges of the bike are.

Clever design on those though, mounting the plate up and whatnot. I'd prefer to have a little more vibration damping just in case though.

Blinkers don't blink fast for a reason. People will either tune it out because it is too fast, or disregard it possibly thinking something is broken. Also, there may be such low resistance that when the turn signal is activated the LEDs remain on instead of flashing.

Thanks a lot guys!  That is exactly the kind off stuff I wanted to see.  You guys thought of all the stuff I was missing.  I am not really familiar with led's so I wondered how bright they were.  Basically shortening the stalks on the rear really is the best mod to make.  I guess its kinda a compromise between looks and safety.  Is it about the same for the front or are flushmounts really worth looking at?  Again thanks for the advice!   :)

OEM signals will always be the brightest, bar none. Have you thought about the Buell signals?

Thanks for all of the help and advice!  I am a rookie gs rider so the help this forum has provided has been priceless.  I went out today and bought the license plate mounted turn signals for the rear and some flush mounts for the front.  I am in the middle of the install now.  Just had to come inside to the cool air conditioner for a moment.  Even at 11:30 it is still hot in sweet home Alabama.  Today's ride to the cycle shop was an adventure.  Will post all of that when the install is done.   8)
