Fixed!

Turns out there was a bug in one of the visitor statistics counters I use, and whenever the server time hit a certain point (like today and a few weeks ago), it got stuck in an infinite loop (for all you folks who know what that means).  The IT guys here were awesome - responded to my email in about 5 minutes and helped me debug it really fast.

So that bug shouldn't be a problem anymore.  And so far the server has had 100% uptime, so I don't forsee any problems in the near future.  I'll wait until John has some spare time and then we can start moving this thing over to the gstwins site.

I edited a bunch of crap, some important, some not, and I hope I added some knowledge. I like where its going, but we still need more publicity.

PS. Why did my member information disappear?  >:(

Nice work!  We definitely need more people adding to it, and more publicity.  It's averaging 30-60 visitors per day and 300-600 page views, but it hasn't grown in content as much as I'd hoped in the last few months.  Any ideas on how to increase publicity and motivate people?

I'd like it to expand, but I'm not sure how. When I made those changes last night I was a bit drunk. I'll think about it, but it seems like we need more publicity. I'm thinking along the lines of more mentions in normal threads and trying to get our listing raised in the google rankings. Maybe we could troll other forums and link to the wiki whenever a GS500 thread comes up?

I'll tell ya what, you guys make a deal with me to NOT troll sportbikes.com, and I'll promote it. I am a moderator over there, and I am sure I can get some publicity for you :)

Haha, thanks. I was thinking troll more along the lines of just watching any other bike forums we frequent and tossing in a link here or there. I used to hang out at TMW and Superbikez but haven't been there in a while since the spelling and grammar make my head hurt.

Well from the site statistics, there are a lot of new people visiting every day.  Many go back, and many do not.  That probably comes from which content they're interested in - lots of info on exhausts, but not much on maintenance or troubleshooting.

Also, new forum members are also learning about the wiki before posting.  There's been a welcome decrease in "what aftermarket exhaust can i put on" posts, which usually end up tarding.  So that's a good thing.

I do see people on other forums ask questions about their GS500, where it's obvious they don't know about this forum.  Usually, they get directed here in the first few replies, so that's good.  I also see hits from unrelated forums, where our wiki is being used as an example.

But if you guys want to get the word out on other forums, more power to ya.  That'll convince even more people that the GS has great support from its riders, and increase site traffic.  In the meantime, I'll work more on getting the massive rejetting page done  :thumb:

-Updated the handlebar section.

This wiki sure is becoming quite the eclectic collection of GS stuff.

I put in a bit more time tonight. What we need most (in my opinion) is a massive effort on the rejetting and other carb related pages. No one wants to get started because its so complicated, but we really need one. It would be really handy since everyone needs to fool around with their carbs at some point and we could direct a lot of noob inquiries there. Could someone who really knows a lot about carbs please step up and compile everything you can think of? I've done some work on mine before but I certainly am not good enough at it to write a detailed page.

I'm working on the rejetting stuff.  Trying to compile info and especially pictures from different posts/pages.  Also, now that I have both kinds of carbs, and neither are rejetted, I'm considering making a Kerry-style video.   Probably wouldn't happen for several months, though...

Anyone who wants to start filling in pieces of the rejetting pages, please do!

Chuck

What I'd like regarding rejetting is the troubleshooting.  The factory pro rejetting page is nice, but it's not quite clear enough to me "if A happens then B, if C happens then D"  For example...

If you blip the throttle at idle and it hangs .....
If it backfires when applying throttle with no load ....
If it backfires when applying throttle under load...
If it backfires releasing the throttle...
If it bogs when you do X ...
If the engine stalls when you turn on the choke...

I only ask because I'm going to be doing this stuff soon.  My rebuilt GS doesn't run as well as my other GS which has never been apart. :)

sanjay

I like the ideas for rejetting troubleshooting.  For a lot of people unfamiliar with how carbs work, it will make tuning much less painful.

Also, we've had some bad vandalism.  One time someone deleted the home page, and another time the same person deleted it and wrote some bad stuff.  It was restored by others in a matter of hours, but still, not good.  I checked the IP address and fortunately it's not a forum member.  I could lock it, but I honestly think that if vandalism is quickly fixed, the person doing it will lose interest.  So we'll just keep an eye out.

Also, Chuck pointed out that www.wiki.gs is available for sale.  I'd rather tie it to gstwins (something like wiki.gstwins.com) but I like wiki.gs as well.  Any thoughts, folks?  Thanks Chuck.  :thumb:

I think tying to gstwins would be best since the wiki info largely comes from the forums and since I like the idea of gstwins being the biggest gs500 site online. I don't know much about website design and maintenance so maybe it wouldn't work for John to have it incorporated into gstwins, but if possible, I'd like that a bit more.

Thanks for hosting it yourself for the time being. Sanjay is the man!

Does anyone have any information on headlight conversions?

I know the re-jetting page may take some time to iron out, but it'd be cool to have some insight on Buell headlight conversions, etc

its a bit of a no brainer really, get your new headlight, remove your old one, put on the new one connect it and got.
you'll find most bikes have the same bulb connections so you won't even have to modify the wiring,

Can you guys owners of gstwin.com add a subDomain 'wiki.gstwin.com' with forwarding to 'http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500'; ? It's really easy to do via the hosting control panel (go to Admin/Domains/Add Subdomain/Forward to, or I can help.).

That will GREATLY reduce pains to type that long wiki URL. I am recently contributing a lot to Wiki (from different PCs) and have to go to this forum to fish out the Wiki URL all the time. Royal pain.
