I am interested in using my BS in nutrition to become a home ec/applied arts teacher by way of the alternate route teaching certification program.  Is there anyone here who can help me out with some questions.  PM me if you or anyone you can hook me up with may be able to help me out.  Thanks in advance!~

Wish I could help.  I'm a teacher in Indiana, but we don't have an alternative to a teaching degree here.  You might contact a college school of education in your area.  Licensing is usually handled by them, and they should be able to tell you the necessary steps you need to take.
Something is wrong with my twin...all of a sudden it's V shaped!  Wait, no, now it's a triple!  ...and I IZ NOT a postwhore!

oh now I see how it is

hmmm... teachers... actually I have a few friends in NJ trying to become teachers, but they're all my age and younger, so none of them are actually teachers yet... ask me in about a year and I might know better

I may be able to help you with networking tho, both my very good friend and my semi-gf teach autistic kids over the summer, so maybe they know someone, but I know nothing about education so I dunno  :dunno_white:

my wife is a teacher here in PA so I know a little of how the alternative program stuff works ( at leat here). She is also now an Instructor in the Social Studies program here at Pitt doing teacher ed, so she may know something about bordering states due to reciprocity.

Anyway, here in PA theres'a a couple ways to get your teaching cert.
You can apply to a graduate program and go for your MAT or your MEd. These are usually two year programs.

The way my wife did it was to go the alternate route. She had her BA in History and Poli Sci. and first she did what was called the PY (Professional Year) program. It's a one year  and you come out with your instructional 1 certificate. Most of the first semester is course work and observation. The second semester is when you do most of your student teaching.

So in one year (two full semesters) you are certified. Usually once a person gets hired by a school district, the school then pays for them to go back and finish their masters over the course of 5 years or so.

That's all I can think of right now, but I can ask my wife tonite and see if she has anything to add.

I was talking to my friend about going in and taking the test to become substitute teachers. It would have been for the same reasons why we were going to take a ceramics class at the local city college. ;)
