When checking the engine oil level, should i check it when its on the side stand or on the center stand?

Centerstand, yes. But I've always heard that you simply set the dipstick in, not screw it in (which is how I did it on my GS). Has this changed while I wasn't paying attention?

I first loosen the dip stick, grad a rag & then hold the bike up by standing over it.
If you look at the Suzuki owners manual it states..

1. Hold the motorcycle verticaly without the centre stand.
2. Start the engine and allow it to idle for a few minutes.
3. Stop the engine and wait three minutes.
4. Check the oil level. The oil filler cap threads should not be run in but just touching the filler hole
    upper edge.

Using the center stand doesn't significantly change the level, and it's much easier and safer.

You might be right. Next time i check the oil, i'll do it both ways & see if there's a difference.

Yeah, do not screw in the dipstick! If you do, your oil level will be significantly lower than it should be. Also keep the bike level, centerstand or holding it.

Egaeus

Kerry already did.  If I wasn't so lazy, I'd search for the thread.

I've done both on and off the centerstand, there's only a millimeter of difference.

I've done it backward, hopping on one foot, upside down with both hands and the other foot tied behind my back, all while doing the hula-hoop and chewing 16 pieces of hubba bubba.

also came up with only a milimeter of difference.  :dunno_white:
