Revs slow to return to 'Normal?'

I have to use full choke for a good few minuits since my last service.
Then when I finally get it around 1200 it doesn't stay there long.  (I've been adjusting the idle @ traffic lights!!!) if it's hot it rises.

My trainer (Test on Tuesday, RoSPA starting September) said I should spray WD-40 on the hose joints from the air filter along and if the revs rise that's where the air leak is.

Anyone try this?

Any other suggestions?

The WD40 also makes white smoke in the exhaust when it is burned in the engine. It works to find leaks.

It might just be the carb balance. If the two carbs aren't synched, the idle will hang high.

Did they adjust the carbs when they serviced it? I'd take it back, and get them to fix it.

They didn't go near the carbs. It's an '01 bike so the carbs should be okay.  (43000km)
YOU can balance carbs :o  How????
This is the first time I'll be going near the bike to do any maintenance :)
Thing is, I will need it for the test, and it won't be going back to a shop for any maintenance.

This bike is just past the warranty. From now on, I'll be doing everything ;)

You can buy balncers, or make one pretty easily. I made one basically like in the link below, but put an aquarium needle valve between the two legs at the top of the U. Mine is only about 12" high, and I use coloured water. The needle valve allows me to adjust the sensitivity (open valve, no sensitivity, progressivley close valve for more sensitivity) as I get the carbs closer to balanced.

The technique is similar on the GS, but there is only a single balance screw between the carbs. Plus with the GS you need someway to supply fuel while having access to the vacuum ports on top of the carbs, and the balance screw. You can use the tank with a longer supply hose, or if you look in the archives you can see how Kerry used a car windshield wash er container.

Wow.
That's cool. :)

Thank's KevinC.

I'll look for a leak on Saturday first.
