Tamiya Aero Mini 4WD cars

A long time ago (okay 4 years or so) we had a Frys Electronics store open up here in Austin. I went there and found this nifty little snap together race car powered by an electric motor.

Specifically, this one:

There wasn't much info about them when I first got it, so I put it back in its box and stuck it up on a shelf. Until recently, it never crossed my mind to see what had happened to them, but their popularity has (apparently) grown. Hop up parts for these things are dirt cheap, and since they are common electric motors there are all kinds of things you can do with them.

Does anyone here know much about these things, have one/some of their own, etc? I think I might have found myself a new hobby. It's cheap, fun, and allows for tons of customization!

After having a gas car, I don't ever want an electric again. Recharging sucks.

Dude I remember those from when I was little! They were always too expensive for me to buy though (or I was too impatient and bought another model kit) and now I HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE!!!

They are like $10 for a car dude. Get one if there is a place that does races near you.

Are they RC or do they run in a slot track?

Neither, nor. Do you see the small guiding wheels? The run in sort of a channel.

yeah i had one of those, I put the huge motor in it and it flew off the track and into the drywall, that wasn't fun at all

And here I thought it was RC and those wheels were just for obstacles.

There is only one store in town that has these I think, so if they do races I think I found myself a new hobby!

DUDE!!! I have two sitting on my monitor right now!

I had no clue what they were when I came across them...

One drunken night... (wavy lines)... The wife was driving my drunk-ass home when I saw a bunch of furniture and junk sitting on the sidewalk. I insisted that we pull over to check it out... Two bicycles, a director's chair, some other random crap. I saw these two unopened boxes with little car pictures on them... I thought they were models. When I was a kid I loved building models, so I grabbed both of them. A few days later I saw the boxes stashed away somewhere random and decided I'd check 'em out. Then I saw what was really going on...

SWEEEEEET! Slot racers!!!

I tried to find some track and other models, but had no luck... Although, I did find a track on e-bay, I forgot to bid on it.

So, I just raced them around in the parking garage at work. They're both pretty much broken now, but they still kinda work.

Just keep looking on ebay, you'll find stuff for 'em...

I did a search and found that some areas actually have HUGE tracks where you can race with others... Sounds like fun, but none around here.
