here in Ontario.. flashing green means ADVANCE LEFT TURN..

And what does that mean?

an advance light means that the light flashes green in only one direction, while the oppossing direction has a red.  this allows one directoin to make their left while the other opposing waits.  after a short time, the flashing or light goes solid at the same time the opposing gets their solid and traffic proceeds in both directions as usual.  it's usually managed by programs and sensors, so that if no one is in the lane, it's doesn't give a flashing green first, but just a regular solid green in both directions.  really helps in particular busy intersections where lefts are popular.  annoying if no program and the other end gets an advance with no one there.

We’ve got turn lanes, that are marked with arrows in both advance light intersections and non-advance light intersections.  I’m not quite sure how that elevates the issue of left turning in front of opposing or oncoming (not perpendicular) traffic.  Care to elaborate what you guys mean?  Curious to understand how that solves that issue.

Michigan, a couple hours away from southern Ontario, has an even more innovative approach, known as the “Michigan left”.  For all intersections where one would normally just turn left at, one must actually cross straight through and pass the intersection, then make a u-turn into on-coming traffic (that of course doesn’t slow down for this common maneuver) so that they can approach the same intersection they just crossed, to make a right turn.  If the oncoming traffic has more then one lane, you need to also switch lanes (however many there are and cross the said aggressively approaching traffic) until you get to the right most lane to make your right turn.  You usually have about a hundred feet or so to do this, otherwise you miss your right turn, go through the same intersection and either find another route, or switch to the left lane, u-turn then repeat the process and try again.  Now that’s an eloquent solution…   :thumb:

Maybe they should learn from the simple turn lane and arrows solution you refer to that I’m still not sure how it’s unique to anywhere else in North America, and other parts of the world.  unless you guys misunderstood and thought that "opposing" (as in north opposes south for example) was intended to mean perpendicular (such as north is perpendicular to east), which it wasn't.  :dunno_white: maybe i misunderstood.

Anyway, I’m sure the scope (if any) of this conversation has more then just intersections to it - back to the more general stereotypes.  they were fun.

At least some people appreciate canada a bit, its not THAT much different than the States, but different enough that a lot of people prefere the pros to the few cons there are of living here instead of U.S.A.

I don't think anybody here doesn't like canada, we're just saying how some things are different, and that we aren't used to them so we think what we first learned with are better.

well said and fair enough.  I'm sure we've all been guilty of that at some point or another.

I like Canada...  I just like to talk shaZam! about Canadians.  Not 'cause I dislike them, but because it's funny when Canadians get pissed off. :icon_mrgreen:

Canadians just don't get pissed off like other people...  There's something very specific about how they do it...  And it totally cracks me up. :icon_mrgreen:

All the Canadians should check out my drunken Everything Canadians Have Ever Done Right thread and reply to it so I can picture you being pissed off.   :icon_mrgreen: :thumb:
