Ok so this is my first year riding and i am a proud owner of my gs500fk4 and im at about 7000 miles right now hoping to be close to 10 by the time i need to store it for the winter..

some mods i am looking to do over the winter

1. rejet carbs with new airfilter (K&N) and removing the airbox
2. new brakes (kevlar) and new stainless steel brake lines
3. somehow make the front forks better i tried to make the spacers but the pvc pipe was too big any suggestions are welcome.
4. new tires
5. new full exhaust system most likely vance and hines
6. 14t drive sprocket (yes or no?) with a new chain (what is a good chain)
7. i would like to take the engine out of the frame and basically do any and ALL maintenance that i can what should should i do?

i would like to know how difficult some of the above are.. im new to motorcycles but have been working on cars for some time.. i have all the tools and some knowledge. Any other mods that you can recommend are always welcome :). Thanks in advance guys!

1st get the claymore or haines manual.

3.  You got two choices either progressive or racetech springs.  You might as well do the rear shock also. ( katana rear shock swap)

5.  New full exhast system, Get the Jardine one it's better and more available stright bolt on.

6.  Check alphafires thread on his sprocket change

7. Copy pasted from here http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/MaintenanceSchedule

Every 7500 miles (12000km)
Replace spark plugs
Replace air filter element
Synchronize carburetors
Check operation of front brake
Check front fork seals for leakage
Check rear suspension operation
Check rear shock absorber for leakage, looseness or damage
Check rear suspension linkage for looseness or damage
Inspect tires for excessive wear, cuts or other damage
Check wheel rims for damage
Inspect drive chain guide for wear
Check break pedal height
Check centerstand for looseness or damage
Check sidestand for looseness or damage

No need to pull the motor for maintenance. That comes waaaayyy farter down the line. (No fixed mileage, when compression is dropping off.)

Thats a huge can of worms you just opened

If you like the way the bike looks then don't change anything.  On the other hand what would you change if you could?
