Throttle stuck.

So, I'll first say, Hi, I just bought my first bike, a GS500E (Purple) 4  weeks ago, took a crash corse (with out crashing) in motorcycle riding from my friend, and now am riding all the time.

But, I'm having a problem with the bike. Maybe it's just because I'm not opporating it right, or maybe something mechanical. But after I've been riding for awhile say 15 minutes, give or take and expessaly at freeway speeds, 45 to 60MPH. After I get off the freeway and slow to a stop the throttle seems to stay open. staying at 3000RPM. If I leave the bike in gear till about 2000 RPMs, it doesn't do it. Also today, it started getting higher, like, starting at 3000RPM, going up to 4500+!  It's rather annoying. I try rolling the throttle a little to see if the cable is stuck, and it just gets wrose. And it only seems to happen after the bike has been running for a little while.

If anyone has any ideas that'd be great. Thanks

It sounds like you may have a vacume leak. When the bike is idling try spraying some carb cleaner or starting fluid on the intake boots and at the joint where the carbs mount to the boots. If you have a leak, your RPM should go uo while you spray on it. Also make sure that your cables are properly lubed, and a good carb cleaning to make sure the throttle plate isn't sticking wouldn't be a bad Idea. Make sure your throttle return spring on your carbs is nice and strong too, replace it if it's weak. also make sure that your idle speed adjuster isnt loose and could be adjusting while you ride. Some low strength loctite would solve that. Good luck with your first bike. :thumb:

The high idle is one of the most common problems with this bike.  There are a ton of posts about it, just run a search for high idle or hanging idle.  It's usually attributed to a lean condition caused either by improper carb settings or an air leak somewhere.

The first thing to try is to adjust the idle down when the bike is hot.  Just turn the big knob sticking off of the bottom of the carbs after you've ridden for 15 minutes or whatever.  Adjust it down to 1200-1500 rpms

If the idle still rises or if it "hangs" then you most likely have a vacuum leak.

One other thing you may want to check also is whether the choke is getting stuck on

you might want to take the tank off (search for exactly what to do) to check the two throttle cables and the choke cable connecting to the carbs. i have a newer bike, but my throttle was sticking open because the rebound cable (that snaps the throttle back to the closed position) was tightened too much. I loosened the bolt where it connects to the carb slightly and the problem was solved.

That's probably a best-case senario, but if you have the tank removed you'll be able to get complete access to the cables to check them out. It's very possible that they need to be lubed as well, which is another easy fix.

I hope that's a helpful place to start; I dont know much about a vaccuum leak, but I wouldnt count that out either.

good luck and enjoy the bike; I'm sure you'll get it solved without too much hassle.

P.S: take the MSF Basic Rider Course. It'll be far more helpful than a "crash course" from a friend. friends are known for teaching very bad habits.

+1

According to the Hurt report, you're more likely to die in an accident if you've been taught by a friend or relative than if you just learned by yourself.
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:

Welcome!

Does the throttle snap back, if you open it all the way (bike off), and then suddenly let go?
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?
