i have found some good priced gsxr rims on ebay which are black instead of the old school white ones i have now.  Does anybody know if any other wheels will fit the gs500

Michael

See pantablo's site for the full gen on putting the GSX-R750 rear wheel in the GS500.  He makes it look really easy.  Just remember, he doesn't have a GS500 anymore- could this mod be one of the reasons?!  :P

Ken, I thought only the 88-89 wheels fit on rear? Now you're saying 89-97? WTF...

And Michael, yes when I got to that point, needing to upgrade a rear wheel for better handling/tires I realized what I really needed was a new bike...

well, even at legal speeds the cbr has better wind protection, corners better, smoother shifting, smoother engine, better brakes, 2 trip counters, temp gauge, better tires....shall I continue?

And it gets better than that above legal speeds.

Bandit 400 w/ a couple of spacers. 4.0" wide. :thumb:

Oh, yeah!

what spacers did you have to use with the bandit 400 wheel? thought the stock GS stuff slid right on, direct swap out wheel mod.
Accelerate like your being chased, Corner like you mean it, Brake as if you life depends on it.

Well, I purchased the wheel from KevinC on the board here.  He had it on his race bike and so it was ready to go when I got it.

From what I can tell the Bandit wheel, while wider, the mounting width of the hub is apparently narrower by about 10mm, so spacers are required for proper fit and chain alignment within the GS swingarm.

So... a spacer was replaced in the cush drive which is 3mm longer and pushes it out (to the left).  Then a 7mm spacer is added between the brake mount and swingarm on the right.  These spacers make up the gap and position the sprocket in stock location for proper chain alignment.

So, basically just 2 spacers required!

whichever rim you get make sure it will fit before you buy it. i just got a gsxr rim and it wont fit the gs cush drive cause it has 6 little rubber thingy's  and the gs needs 5. watch out
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

the guy said it was 88-89 style rim but upon further searching kerry found that those years have 2 different styles of rims. one being the one we need which has 5 little rubber pieces and the other one which is the one i got.
here's the link to that topic

Luke, make sure that you have read werase643's 2nd post and my 2nd post in that other thread.  The two of us basically agreed that you were sent a '90 rim after all.

Most wheels have date stamps on them for when they were manufactured. They are at the end of the spokes.
Common sense in not very common.

Thanks for the tip!

I just went out and shot pics of the rear spokes on my '99.  The day/month thing can be confusing, but I think I have them in month / day / year order.  (My front rim had the numbers 3 and 19 and 98.)

I have a new '04 gs500f and was wondering if the older gs500 wheels will fit... I found some '93 wheels pretty cheap and was thinking of getting them chromed... anybody have any part number information on this?

New user... Like the site and my 500f.. thanx

I had to replace both of my rims because they were bent and a wheel straightening company wouldn't touch bike rims.  I ended up buying a rear rim from a scrap yard that was from an '88 GSX 600 and it fit perfectly.  The guy at the lot said that not many people crash gs500's so it's hard to find scrap parts.  Apparently TONNES of people were dropping their GSX 600's.  The numbers on the rim match the original rim too.

Impressive...bringing up a 2 year old thread.

I got a good laugh about "not many people crash GS500's".
