Does anyone know if I can use the gauge cluster off of an SV650 on my GS500F? I am wanting to mount them off the triples and get some clip-ons for a little sportier look. Does anyone know anything I might need to watch out for if so?

the key would be how the sv 'reads' the speed from the front wheel and how it 'reads' the engine speed. My guess is that the sv uses more modern tech, similar to the gsxr instead of the older tech of the gs.

short version: I dont think they'll swap over but I'm guessing.

I have a set of SV gauges that I will be installing. It requires the SV speed sensor since it uses magnetic pulses and is not mechanical. The SV front axle is large in diameter, so a bushing is required to make up the difference. I have not checked the width yet.

It is not a direct bolt-on but very possible.

Do you know what year gauges would work best? I know that there are at least two different style SV gauges with different looking connections in back.

The tach should be easy, either mechanical or electric but the speedo sounds like a pain. Do they really look that cool? It would probally be easier to replace the gauge faces on the stock ones, I'm sure you can find those somewhere.

The 99-02 SV650 (non-S) gauges are all the same. In 03 both the S and non-S changed instrument clusters, but I am not too familiar with the 03+. They changed to an FI system but that should not be a problem. There would be an extra FI indicator light that is not used. I have a 02 SV650S instrument cluster which I may fit on another bike. it has different connectors than the non-S but wires up the same.

All SV's use electrical tachs. With the GS-F, that will be easy since it already has one. No problem with the non-F, just connect the left coil signal wire the signal input of the tach.

The speedo is not really a pain. It just a matter of the different size axles. There are other methods to get the signal to the speedo. Look on www.svrider.com. There are several posts about this where they changed the front end to a GSXR, as the front wheel does not have the accomodation for a speed sensor. The SV sensor does fit in the GS wheel and does look the same width but I have not measured it yet.

And YES, they do look much better than the GS gauges. If I get them mounted this weekend, I will try remember to post a pic.

I have been thinking about rigging up some fancy shmancy digital gauges for a while now but wasn't sure how I'd handle the speed sensor.  So I just took a look at the SV forum and it seems the suggested method is a hall effect sensor mounted on the brake caliper bracket and little magnets attached to the rotor.  I haven't thought about doing it this way, but this does sound like a good idea.  The only downside with this is hall effect sensors are a little fragile, so it might break being mounted there.  A VR sensor like the ones on our cranks might be better as they are damn near bullet proof but a LOT LOT harder to implement well.  Anyway, I think I'll keep my eyes open for some gauges and give this a shot.
