Idle problems this morning

Looking for some ideas for the idle problem I had this morning.

Set up:  Stock air filter and exhaust, rejeted to 40, 125, 1 shim (3mm washer) on needle, idle screw 3 turns out

I started the bike w/ full choke, ran it for a couple minutes while I put my gear on (like normal)... Backed off the choke then it died.  I started again a few times and it would run fine with a little throttle, so I finally turned up the idle.  Coming to my first stop it was idling high so I turned it down.  Maybe a mile away at another stop, I had to turn the idle down again at a stop.  No more stops for a number of miles until I hit traffic.(the bike should be fully hot by then)  I turned the idle down a bit again while creeping along in traffic.  From there it seemed OK. When I get to the parking garage I think the idle was in the right range, but i made a small adjustment (don't remember if it was up or down).  I let it run for a minute or two to see if the idle was rising or anything and I noticed it was racing a little.  Maybe climbing a 2 or 3 hundred RPM then falling back down... not that noticeable, but noticeable enough

Thoughts?

I am not quite sure but I hear that an air leak might do that.

With the weather change to colder, the idle will change, adjust as neccessary.  But, remember to always set idle to 1200 after a ride.

I always have to adjust mine when the weather changes, usually only twice a year (summer, autumn).
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

This seemed to be a major change.  And we're having a bit of an indian summer here after a week or two of highs in the 50's, and it seems the idle needed to go up rather than down (for today's warmer weather)

I've been thinking either vacuum leak or a sticking choke cable... having to adjust the idle doesn't bother me too much, but I don't like the possible racing idle

Bike started and warmed up like normal this evening, but on my ride home I again had to turn the idle down at the first few stops I made.  When I got home, I had it right, but it still seemed like it was racing a little

Addendum: I have to use the throttle to keep the bike from stalling in the mornings.  This is normal.  Shouldn't have to, but when I ride away after I turn the choke off, it's not really a problem.  Basically, at the first couple of stoplights, I just 'rest' the throttle so that I can just feel where the stop is, but keep it off the stop (idle screw).  It's just compensating for a minor issue (idle too low in mornings, but perfect anytime else).

I've never had that problem since I rejeted 4 months ago and only when really cold before that :dunno_white:

How old is your gas?  My GS starts dispalying various similar shinannegans when it hasn't been run for 2-3 weeks.  It's jealous of my DR.  A fresh tank of gas, a little kiss-up and it's fine again.

Good luck.

Well, my choke cable is definately sticking.  I can pull the choke closed, but when I push it back, the slide doesn't return.  The slide moves back and forth fine on it's own though.

I'm having trouble getting the cable to loosen up... any recommendations?  I've been using WD40 so far.  Will I have better luck if I pull the cable off the bike?  Or might it just be better to go get a new cable?
