we've done that...but we did it with an RM250...

It'd be cooler to take the KLX, ditch the motor, slap in a 6" rear and a 3" front, then squeeze a TL1000R engine in her.

What good does having the GS wheels on that thing make compared to standard SM wheels?

lighter, bigger brakes, wider rubber, and they look neato.

They are so not lighter.

Alpha - the GS rims are easier to adapt/make spacers for, expecially the front, which usually holds a 1.65" to a 2.50" wide rim (1.65-1.95 for 21" dia. rims; 2.15-2.5 for 19" dia.).
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Most SM wheels are 4 to 4.5" wide, as far as I know.

This is without going specialty wheels like Excel, right?

I'd have to see them on the scale...but I know for a fact that my 6" TL rear wheel + a worn 190 tire weighs in at 30lbs even, and the wheel off my GS750E + tire weighs about 32lbs.  The GS750E wheel has the same dimensions as the KLX wheel and they're both made of steel.  So it's not beyond my reasoning to believe the GS500's wheels are lighter than the KLX's.

Again, though, I've never put a GS500 or KLX wheel ona  scale.

The rear tire on the KLX is listed as a 110/100~18.  I'm not sure how wide the actual wheel is, but that tire would suggest it's narrower than the GS's.

I'll remind you that the KLX is not a motard.  It's an enduro/dual sport.  The DRZ400SM, for example, comes with a 4.5" rear, iirc.

Bingo, which is why I was questioning the GS wheels over SM specific rims.

that would likely be the same reason you don't have a GSXR front end.

Make the GS a SM, or at least give it SM wheels.  Where's my handguards?...

motard spoke rims are EXPENSIVE!
i had all the stuff to do gs wheels
we also have a milling machine and lathe at work used the klx axels so the dirt wheels are an easy swap
got the michelin race h2's for $130 shipped(150/110) tires were the only expense i had or machined everything else.
oh and the mags are slightky heavier than the dirt wheels but the 650 makes plenty of power and we got it tagged and insured great bike for the N, GA mtns.
note the paint i do it for a living

That'll make cleaning the rotor carriers so much easier!
