Hey guys. So my 04' gs has been making a clanking/rattling noise when I pull the clutch in, usually only after the bike has warmed up already. Could anyone link me to some still downloadable CCT and CC endplay sound clips? All the links I've explored have led to old, dead pages. Any help is appreciated because until I know for sure what the noise is and how to fix it, each rattle is like a chain scraping across my face!

Thanks,

possibly the clutch just "knocking" around when you pull the clutch in.  The plates dont have pressure on them when you pull the clutch in so they are loose and will knock around alittle.  Might be that.  Shouldnt be a problem.  The dl1000 has the same "problem" and they fixed it but there is nothing wrong with it, just kinda noisy.

I will try and listen to the soudn in light of that fact to decide, but that sounds reasonable and is easing. Right now I'm more worried about the oil level, which seems to be about 2mm too high on the dipstick :o

How long would I have to run the engine before that would cause serious damage?

There is a little axial thrust bearing on the end of the clutch push-rod behind the inner basket. It only comes into use when the lever is pulled and the clutch disengages. If it has failed and broken up this would cause the problem you describe. When you pull the clutch lever can you feel a slight vibration or a grinding sensation travelling through the cable? If so that would indicate the bearing is faulty. However it could equally be a broken clutch-plate or a loose basket or several other things. Either way, noise indicates a problem and you need to investigate immediately before the situation gets worse and serious damage results.

I'm not sure about the vibration in the cable but I'll check. I guess I'll take it into a shop soon, maybe on Monday... Needless to say I will be very irritated if the bike requires expensive repairs. I don't have any problems switching gears... What could cause a broken clutch plate, and would there be any other symptoms? Keep in mind this grinding noise starts happening after ~15-20 minutes of freeway speeds, definitely not cold.

PS. I'm located in Los Angeles, and if anyone reading this thread is too, let me know if you're interested in meeting up for some riding sometime soon, assuming my bike is not about to die, that is.

hope your noisy clutch isn't too serious.
I live in the San Fernando Valley and I try to ride for an hour or two every weekend , mostly in the Santa Monica mountains west of Topanga canyon.
Stunt road, Piuma  road, Mulholland highway, old Topanga.

we should definitely ride sometime then, maybe next weekend. I'm in downtown LA, currently at USC. I might head through angeles forest highway in a few minutes... Trying to decide whether or not I should take the 100 mile trek now or wait until I've changed my oil... I guess I will wait as I'm really not in the mood for excessive highway riding.

I'm not the fond of long freeway rides either.  That's why I usually stick around the Mulholland Highway area, very close to home.
I can get on some twisty canyon roads in less than 10 min.
It's got to be closer than going all the way up to Angeles crest.
If you're set on Angeles Crest/Angeles Forest I can probably swing it, won't know for sure till later in the week.
