In my '90 GS500E there is a knock in the engine that has just appeared after I had changed the oil. I think it might need a new oil pump.            My older brother being so smart, has previousley laid the bike down 3 times, and it has been knocked over by my little couzin once, I am not sure if this has anything to do with the knock. I am told that it may just be harmless camshaft play, but the noise seems to be coming from either of the pistons. I have tried changing the oil and the oil filter again, as well as the spark plugs, but still witl no luck with getting rid of the knock. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hilight these --> with your cursor

Does the oil light flicker on tickover?

Hi Paperboy,
Sorry to hear about your engine problems, but I think you have problems far greater than oil pump issues.
If you believe the knock is coming from a piston, why are you looking at replacing the oil pump?
If the noise is already there, the damage has likely been done.
Had you run the engine low on oil?
Was the engine running for some time while the bike was on its side after your cousin knocked it over?
It sounds to me like you have to look deeper into this issue.
Start the engine and let it idle.
Take a long screwdriver and hold the tip on the engine and bend down to place the handle at your ear. You can use the screwdriver to act as a kind of microphone to allow you to hear where the knocking is coming from. Move the screwdriver around the cylinders and cam cover to try to find the source of the knock.
Have you tightened the exhaust bolts? Often they loosen and a loud knock can emanate from the area due to leaking exhaust flow.
Knocks are not normal.
Camshaft end play is a common issue with these engines, but it will not sound like a knock from a piston.
Let us know what you find and we can continue to try to diagnose it.
The more detail you provide, the better we can all help you.
Best wishes,

OMG...I've noticed the same problem.  It seems to be "knocking" when I'm in second (or is it third ?) gear.

If the weather is nice this weekend, I'm going to take it out for a ride to definitely find out when I hear it, what gear I'm in and the rpm.

is it constent .. or on a off ..... kind of like the camchain tick i have on my bike ..make me think i have a valve tune up coming . but when i listen it just gose tick,tick,tick.....tick .........tick tick,........tick..... not valves .. if it was it would just tick consten .. so is it a stedy knock or not ?

Yea Im sorry it is more of an on and off ticking noise, But i have noticed if the bike sits around for an hour or so the noise will go away if i start it up after i have run it. I am not sure what it could be but the noise is less severe now and it comes and goes.  I might need a valve adjustment or something like that, The oil light doesnt flicker or anything except turn on before i start the bike. I am just getting into motorcycles, and i can't wait until next spring when i can actually ride them. Being that i am 15 that is.

Thanks a million,

i got jsut over 20,000 on my 2004 and theres a lot of nocking, ticking, and a slew of other nosies :o
only one new noise, after shuting the throttle, its after firing in the exhaust. or poping a good bit. thinking the exhust vavles have gone tite (made them titer on last valve ajust ment to get closer to spec) so i will be doing the valves very shortly.
