Can anyone clarify why there is a GS 500 and a GS 500 E (I'm guessing this is a marketing thing) and if there are any real differences other than the letter E?  Thanks.

TheGoodGuy

I say E = Everyday

Though if your GSJack its T = Touring.
'01 GS500. Mods: Katana Shock, Progessive Springs, BobB's V&H  Advancer Clone, JeffD's LED tail lights & LED licence plate bolt running lights, flanders superbike bars, magnet under the bike. Recent mods: Rejet with 20/62.5/145, 3 shims on needle, K&N Lunch box.

I think they are all GS500E's.  Each year has a different letter after the 'E'.  I think mine '93 is a GS500E J.  Not quite sure which letter mine is.

I'm almost certain the E means chain driven.

I believe somebody told me once that the GS's 2000+ are just GS500, and the old ones are GS500E.

E= economy, everyday, everybody

gs500 goes back a few years, 70's i think, not just to 89'.  in fact, i think that the guys overseas may have had it before we did, the sportier style that is.  they always get the good stuff.

It stands for Extra. Extra letters...

its just a model code, like L, G, T, E, ES   the GS500 came out in 89, the gs550(smallest 4 cyl at time) started in 70's every thing lower was a twin gs450 on down to 250  GS550,650,750, 850,1000,1100, and GS1150ES were all 4cyl.  G's and some L's i belive were shaft drive( Ithink)

There is a letter that designates the year but it comes after the e. No idea what it means though...for that matter what does the GS mean (we've been here without any conclusive answers).

In GS parlance...

L = cruiser

T = British / Triumph

G = shaftie

E = Euro (contemporary bodywork / sport)
