Interesting comments, however I must dissagree in part with the suggestion that oil analysis is not of any real benefit. It is true that a regular programme of sampling and reporting is required so that a trend can be established and monitored. We do a similar thing with large industrial gearboxes and compressers that can weigh several tons and have a very high capital value. However I feel a one-off analysis can prove to be a very good indicator as to the overall condition of the engine. A test often reveals potential fault conditions that could only be detected normaly by dismantling and inspecting and highlights issues before they become serious. You could look at it at being similar to a `Blood-Test` If I was buying a high value bike 2nd hand from a dubious sourceĀ  I would have the oil tested as a one off without hesitation. In the link I posted there are some sample reports that make for interesting reading......along with prices!

Certainly!  I consider oil analysis part of a pre-purchase inspection for used capital equipment.  Although the results can be skewed by lubricant time in service, it is another tool available to gauge the condition of the machine.

What I was trying to say is that a comprehensive oil analysis program on a $1,000 engine isn't worth the money or the trouble.  Generally a "gud 'nuff" approach works.   :)
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

I got my bike at 4,000 mi, have changed the oil (and brand) twice. Is it REALLY that bad to change brands? I first put in 10w30 on accident, then switched in a few days to Torco 10w40, then most recently just figured screw it, Suzuki oil is cheaper, so I put that in. Dont tell me Im ruining my engine.... am I...

The only problem anyone should have with changing oil is that if you have an old engine that has run on nothing but dino-juice, and you put synthetic in it, it may very well burn oil like crazy when it didn't before, and kill your engine.  Also, if you put thinner oil in

Changing brands won't really do anything.  Just use oil with the proper API rating and you'll be okay.
Sorry, I won't answer motorcycle questions anymore.  I'm not f%$king friendly enough for this board.  Ask me at:
