If he gets that one good shot in I likely won't care anymore.

Risk management.  If it's not worth the risk, tuck tail and run.  If you think you can take him, let him have it.  Sounds like you did the right thing.  Never NEVER fight a drug addict with your fist.  I did it once and I did not enjoy waiting for my blood test to come back.  I'm glad you posted this because people need to think about what they will do in situations like these.  Pick up a weapon and introduce him to it.  A blunt object, a kitchen knife, broom, anything within reach.  Grab the object and get as much space between you as you can.  If he continues to come at you, beat the living hell out of him with the weapon till he stops moving.  Carrying mase is good, but I use an asp.  These are great little compact weapons.  It only takes 1 hit with an asp to drop the biggest badass.  If your state has concealed carry laws, get some training, get licenced, get a weapon, and keep it with you at all times.  It's better to have a weapon on you and not need it than to need one and not have it.  Trust me, I know.  I've been on both sides of the spectrum.

Things to remember about knives.
1) Over 75% of the planet's unlawful killings are done with knives.
2) A survey of Police officers (in UK) who survived knife attacks showed that about 70% of them did not see the knife until after the injury. These guys are trained observers on the lookout.

If you see the knife and have advance warning you are lucky, step back if you can. If you are going to act, act positivly and quickly, don't fuff around.

As a young man a guy threatened me with a blade and as I took a step back he started to juggle the knife from hand to hand, very theatrical! he fumbled and I kicked straight in the crutch, steel toecaps, oooooh!    :o  :o    I still have the knife somewhere. i was very very lucky.

I was lucky enough later to go on a Police training course run by the marines for self defence. Because of the stats this centred on knife attacks and there are some good techniques but you have to practice like any other skill. Undoudtedly the best way to survive is not be around when the blade is thrust.

In Cricket the testicular guard, or Box, was introduced in 1874. The helmet was introduced in 1974. Is there a message??

I am a second degree black belt in Tae-kwan-do.  I have been out of that for a long time and my master tought us a lot of good things.  Disarming was one of those.  But he didn't teach everyone disarming because they were not mentally ready cause then they would feel that they could disarm anyone.  He tought us to use that as a last ditch effort if your life is in jepardy.  Guns vs Martial arts ... well guns will win by as little as 5 inches or as much as the range of a good pistol or rifle.  You did the right thing CC.  Anyone who says they would have kicked his ass just remember that he had the knife not you and all it takes is one jab/slash to end your existance.

I agree with Jarret.  Keep your blood and the blood of the tweaker in two seperate containers.  Tweakers freak me out.  But their body fluids scare me even more.

The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

Ok people, you can do what you want, but I really doubt that fighting him, regardless of my advantage would have been a good idea.

I mean even if I was packing at that point and I bust it out both of us are probably going to jail. Self Defense laws are not set up to allow me the use of unjust force, and when instead of participating the best course is to end said conflict.

For example, let's say I punch him, he drops the knife and I jump on top of him and punch again. Boom, we both go to jail. It's called assault.

Sure it's the "macho" thing to teach him a lesson, but honestly you have to remember, he thinks he's right in this circumstance, so all he's going to think is "Revenge on that f*** who dared to mess with me!" So he's not going to learn anything.

And how many of you have actually, truly sent someone to the hospital? No there's nothing macho about that. That means you could not properly handle the situation. That means you thought it was a good idea to hurt another human being because you don't agree with him. That means you lost your cool and went off on someone.

That being said I have. I f%&ked up. I felt horrible.

You have never been more scared, confused or depressed than at that moment, because he went from living to falling limp on the ground, possibly DEAD. At that moment macho doesn't matter at all. What matters is calling 911 and checking for a pulse.

Guess what, that does not make me a hero, that makes me a LOSER. Luckily no long term effects, and since he attacked me and I punched only once I didn't go to jail. If he hadn't come back to guess who would have been up for manslaughter charges? Regardless of the fact that I don't even have a PARKING TICKET and he probably has a sheet a mile long?

Sorry, but if you still think that fighting (which you will BOTH go to jail for) is a good idea you need to re-evaluate yourself and ask yourself what kind of hole in yourself are you trying to fill by being a "tough guy"?
