I use this.  You don't anything too fancy anything you use will make a big difference.

If you don't have knee armor in your riding pants get a set of knee pads to block the wind.
I got my at Modelles they are thin and flexible but don't see them on their website anymore.
With the neck gaiter and knee pads you are set for cold weather.

I got one last winter  & believe that they are a must have for winter riding. Mines a bit different to yours & is basically a polar fleece tube.

I dont think there would be any benefit of being able to take it off while you've still got your helmet on. I put mine on before I put my jacket on & tuck the base of it under the collar of my jacket & do my helmet up over the top of the neck warmer.

Just make a point of wearing it at all times when the temperature is below a certain temp or at certain times of the year.
