Turn signals do not work. Sources for problem?

Got on bike today, rode it to a frame specialist to see about the triple/fork issue.  Anyway, my 04 turnsignals are not working, none of them.  I hit the switch, nothing on the dash nor the blinkers does anything.  Any suggestions?

FIrst, check the bulbs.  It's unlikely that all 4 are bad, but....

Then, try the flasher.  Probably the most likely culprit.

If that's not it, then check the switch.

Bypass the flasher unit and flick the switch between left and right, if both front and rear indicator lights come for each side the flasher unit is shagged. If they dont chances are its the switch.

there is wiring diagrams in the wiki.

Thanks!  I'll check it out on my day off Wed.  Thank you for the help.

BTW, the fork issue....the guy sat on my bike, then pulled it up to the corner of his shop, stopped, and then he turned the handlebars hard bouncing the wheel off the post.  This was to move the forks back, which he said were probably just twisted b/c of triple tree misallignment.  Anyway, he told me to take it down the road and check it out, which I did, and it seems almost perfect.  Note I said almost perfect.  Anyway, I have never heard or seen this trick so it was interesting, and free.

Isnt that what was suggested you try by several people in your last thread only hold the wheel between your knees??.....or am I thinking of another one.

middlem2

Well we tried that, but this seemed to really work.  It is all good now.

The signals, my manual was no help.  I checked the 20A fuse and changed it out.  I took the bike to the dealer and he said to chekc the fuse box.  I cant find the fuse box nor what he called the blinker?

3imo

have you checked your blinker fluid levels?  be sure to close the blinker before you top off.

Yeah funny.  Seriously, the 20A fuse is now replaced, however it apparently was not the problem.  Dealer said to check the fuse box, but it is not in the manual.  I also would like to know where the blinker unit is.  Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing but he said it should be there somewhere under the seat.

What/where is the flasher?????????????

3imo, thank you for the chart, however I'm no good at P&ID stuff.  We pull these things at work every now and then and I count on someone who is going to be doing the work to know what that is all about.  Kinda funny but I go blank in about a millisecond looking at one.  Maybe I should pay more attention to the training on that next time.

Can someone tell me where exactly on the bike to look next?  Assuming everything is grounded, the bulbs are good, the bulb in the dash is good, and I know the 20A fuse is working, in what order and where do I need to check and how?  I can have my bike mechanic over, but I can check whatever you may suggest first.

Toledo Jim

Forget the fuse, there is only one in the circuit, if it was blown nothing would work.

middlem2

OK, what do you suggest?  What is the flasher?  Where do I check next?  Is is possible if a wire is lose on one signal, the whole thing would be out?  I'm wondering since I had the front off during the fork issue.

Toledo Jim

I suggest you find someone that can read a wiring diagram and check the wiring for the turnsignals from the picture supplied before.

Start with checking the connections in the headlight bucket, color codes for wires are on the diagram.

I have a 93 and my t/s relay was located on right side of bike behind plastics, near the fuse. I don't know if yours is in the same place but it is probably close.

Someone may find the pic from Kerry that shows it, I am terrible at searching myself or I would find it for you.

For MUCH more info search for turn signal relay, author Kerry. Should fin a lot.

Good luck.

Jim

Check  this thread for a pic of the turn signal relay.

Simple turn signal relay test:

If you're satisfied that the wiring is ok you can test the ckt by jumping across the lt. blue and orange wires at the turn signal relay connector.  Pull the relay and use a short piece of wire (paper clip?) to jump the wires,  turn the ignition key switch on and actuate the turn signal switch to one side.  The turn signal lamps and turn indicator lamp should all light steady. Check the other side the same way.

If they don't light up then the wiring is not right.

If they do light up then the relay is bad.

If I remember correctly the turn signal relay AKA the flasher unit is the rear most black box underneath the right hand side rear plastics.

I'd recommend checking it first using the method Jhon suggested.
