I lived in the U.P. for a couple of years back in the mid-70's.  My dad was stationed at K.I. Sawyer AFB.  I attended Gwinn High School ("Go Modeltowners!") and we went to church in Marquette.  I'd like to get back up there sometime and look around.

Are you guys planning to do the Mackinac Bridge?

I also meant to say:  4 days for 1200 miles is about right for your first long trip.  At 300 miles a day you'll have plenty of time to stop for rests, take pics, etc.

If you can ride for an hour you can ride for a day.  Just take it an hour at a time!  Even if I'm not stopping for pictures all the time, I still have to stop every 3 hours or so for gas.

Once in a while I reflect on what my mind set must have been before I went on my first long trip (UT to AL).  It just seemed so distant and unknown and....so forth.  But you know what?  A long journey is just a series of 12-second futures (MSF-influenced phrase) strung together.  If you can ride to the next town from where you live, you can ride to the NEXT one and the NEXT one.

So relax and have a good time!  Well, don't relax TOO much.  You've still got to be sharp mentally, especially in a group.  But you know what I mean!

hey fellow Michigander! Where in the great mitten state are you? I live in South Haven(southwest by St. Joseph/Benton Harbor area) and wouldn't mind getting in touch with you, if you don't mind. Good luck in your trip though. Safe riding!! :thumb:
I regret that I have but one ass to ride a bike with.

Have fun! That sounds like a blast!

In August my boyfriend and I are going to drive along Lake Michigan into the U.P. and cross the bridge and go south along the lake to Ludington and take the fairy back across. Unfortunately I won't be riding my GS because he doesn't ride, but we will be camping, so that should be fun.

If you stop anywhere really great, let me know when you get back!

Good luck!

Whoa! Sounds like a blast chris, i'm jealous! I'd love to go, but i know i haven't logged enough hours in the saddle yet. Nothing like getting over confident too early then paying for it with a crash, you know? Next year i'm game though!

Enjoy!  Hope you have a gel seat or plan to put a couple of steaks back there.  The GS isn't the best perch for long miles....course my tush is kinda old anyway.

Share your photo's please!
GS500E....back where it all began....again.
